I sort of get this. It's not always my favorites, but just something about random actors or characters that'll strike me and I can't do fandom or anything without getting a terrible weird embarrassment...or something.

You shouldn't feel out of place for not wanting to read smut of the characters and pairings you love. Some people search out smut, some people read it if it's there and some people don't read it.

It doesn't matter, as long as you're enjoying it. :)

I kinda get this... I have a weird thing, I don't even know if you could call it a kink with some of my ships where I prefer reading porn about one person from the pairring with someone I hate seeing them shipped with, rather than what I actually ship. I don't even know what's up with that...

I do have one OTP I kill for porn of, but it's an unpopular ship in a small fandom, and I can't write pron myself...

I feel like this, sometimes. Find myself skipping over a lot of well-written porn because it's like, I just spent this all this time getting really attached to these characters as people via amazing fic and now they're embarrassing sex dolls and I just can't be seeing this right now. It's easier when they're still just shallow pretty faces to me, or the sex is only a small aspect of really intense characterization. Intelligent fic ruins me for porn, man.

I used to be like you. Man I couldn't see people kiss on TV without having to leave the room with embarrassment. I'm not even going to say how stupidly old I was before I got over that.

But I did get over it. I made a concerted effort, and I was able to desensitize myself. It was definitely worth it. Still love gen and cuddling (well, to the extent I did before at least) but now I definitely don't have to worry if I see something sexual unexpectedly pops up. And of course, I have a whole cornucopia of smut for when the mood strikes.

I know how that feels. There are certain characters in my fandoms I just feel weird reading or even writing smut for, so you're not alone, anon.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this, anon! =) Porn is pretty much my least favorite thing in fandom, but I'm a hapless romantic sap, LOL. I've written my share of smut, pretty much only in one fandom, but as I've branched out, I've left it to the wayside.

Sometimes you just want the hugging and cuddling and falling-in-love stuff, you know?

I sympathize with the feeling out of place part OP. I totally understand the feeling of being the odd one out when everyone else is about the hot sex and I'm just all about the romance and emotions and cuddles and angst and I just skip over all the explicit parts. I've read fic by authors who apologize for doing fade-to-black on their sex scenes and I'm all like "No actually that's pretty much perfect for me." LOL. For me though it's not about embarrassment - it's just that the explicit stuff doesn't do anything for me, and sometimes actually throws me out of the story (weird I know, but there it is). For me it's all about the emotional porn I guess. ;)

I mean, I know it's sorta the point of a pairing to end with the sex, but I don't know, I enjoy so much more the romantic aspect of the relationship. It feels really awkward to read about a couple I like doing it. For example, I read a smutfic the other day about my latest OTP and I was like o_O "no, just no".

I get this a lot, and it's why I can't read most fanfiction lol orz. I tend to not mind art, but fic where it gets into the characters heads (even if its really well written!).. I just can't get through. Especially if it's of characters portrayed by actors (instead of illustrated). I just.... can't.... evven if I "ship it". orz

It feels the same way, too, like I don't like the idea of fantasizing about people I know, or friends of mine.

So idk. It only bothers me because a lot of my friends who are really into fandom are really into fanfiction, which I just can't handle most of the time. So I'm missing out on a social part. Other than that, I really dont care haha. Of course, when there's a really well written story but its porny fanfic, that sucks too.

I see where you are coming from OP; no shame! I can't think about rl people I know well in sexual situations, and, I guess if I got to "feeling" really close to a character in a friendly way (you know what I mean) then I'd have a hard time reading smut featuring the character. I don't normally think of characters as anything other than characters, though; so, thinking of them in sexual situations doesn't bother me (or, rather, it does "bother" me, but in a good way :p).

OP here and I'd just like to say all the nice and positive reactions to my secret have really made me smile so Thankyou to everyone, and everyone who said they felt the same, as I feel less weird and alone now :)
A lot of fandom seems really focused on porn/smut fics and other fan works, and while I sometimes like it on the whole I'm really not into it and prefer romance. And when I do like it it has to be absolutely as vanilla as can be... I felt very 'prudish' and a bit boring.
And I can't deal with it when it's of couples that I love or am very invested in.
But I'm glad there are similar people out there :)
