York isn't that old (50 years next year) but still had its share of strange traditions when I was there.

I think this is a genuine "well, bugger me" moment. When I went to York for open day/interview years ago, they went on so much about its ancient and illustrious buildings that I just assumed it was another pre-19th century foundation. I'm honestly shocked to see it's so recent. That casts their big speech in a different light now.

But anyway, yes, most unis have one or two, but not usually anything like Raisin Weekend at St Andrews (which I was fascinated by in Student Prince). The medieval and early modern traditions are the really interesting ones :D
