They're not me, however, I do still want to write the author a letter. Not a death threat, just something telling him how upset I am that he didn't do any research about the town and how much he got wrong.

OP is writing about how insanely relieved OP was when OP came out as an agnostic. OP was so relieved that OP thinks his community is teh bomb for not destroying OP over OP not believing in God.

OP has stockholm syndrome, kiddies.

Maybe, maybe not. There are small towns where the norm is to be a part of some religion, and OP may have never met another person who was agnostic prior to 'coming out'. In that set up, I could see being worried that the people around you [presumably your friends and family more than anything else] is going to react badly to that.

Also, I got the impression that, while that played into it, it wasn't the only, or main, reason OP thought their town was 'the bomb'.
