Yeah, I'm not a good representation of my town, one of the many reasons I'm glad they're still so nice to me. I may have been a bit harsh, and I know sending a death threat would probably be a terrible idea, but it was awful of them to portray my hometown in such a disgusting manner. Not death threat awful, sure, but I was going through a bad time when I wrote this secret (it's actually a few weeks old, I only just got the courage to submit it recently). Now, I realize how awful that would've been to send a death threat, but I do wish I had sent the author a letter telling him how hurt and upset I was about how he portrayed the place.

I'm sorry if I came off as rude, but I wasn't really in a good place when I wrote the secret.

OP, lots of places are portray badly or just flat out wrong in the media. ALL THE TIME. EVERY DAY. Trust me, I'm from New York City - you have no idea how often I come across a ludicrously inaccurate portrayal of my home. Your situation is not unique. Yeah, it's annoying when someone writes something inaccurate about something/someplace you care about and maybe it feels hurtful when your nice home is portrayed as awful, but just take a moment and think logically about this: what impact does it have on your life? Why would you let this one author have such power over you? You don't come off as rude in this secret, you come off as vaguely psychotic, to go to such an extreme as wishing death on someone for doing something that a million other authors have done a million times before and will continue to do because authors don't always get everything right.

The problem is, NYC is portrayed positively as well - I'd say I've seen more positive portrayals of it than negative, and practically everyone who asked me what I thought of it when I visited were astonished when I said I didn't enjoy it much.

If this is literally the only representation ever that the OP's ever got for their home, and it's inaccurate and offensive, then I can understand being pissed off. Maybe not to the point of, you know, death threats, because that's just a biiiit of an overreaction, but still pissed off.

People in big cities like you or I get the positive as well as the negative. People from smaller towns don't get that luxury.

There's positive portrayals, sure, but are you aware of the reputations that NYC has? But do I threaten every person who says that the city is a stinkhole/hellhole/full of rude people/violent/whatever else? Nope, because I know how to roll my eyes at someone's ignorance and move on with my life. It's not a ~luxury~ to have your hometown portrayed positively in the media - it literally has no impact on your life at all unless maybe you're in the tourism industry and that negative portrayal dissuades people from visiting, in which case I have much more sympathy for people in, say, Mexico or Colombia or another country whose home is constantly and consistently portrayed negatively. When OP can cite more than one singular example in the history of fiction in which their home is portrayed as horribly as some other countries and cities are, then maybe I'll feel some sympathy for them.

Just noticed I messed up my italics in my last comment, sorry about that.

And yeah, true... still, it's sort of... nice to be acknowledged, I guess? Like, even though it doesn't impact my life, I still get a smile out of seeing Sydney mentioned in media, just because it doesn't happen very often. If the only time your home is mentioned is in a very negative light, then yeah, it can be upsetting. It would definitely be moreso to live somewhere with CONSTANT negative portrayals, true, but that doesn't discount individual portrayals.

I do agree that they massively overreacted, though ^_^;; Sure, be upset over it, but death threats... yeahhh.

Oh, OP. I know the sting of having your birthplace/home misrepresented all too well.

What I've learned is to avoid media that deal with my home as a location. It's just not worth the anger. It distracts me too much from the story itself, I'm better off just skipping it.
