I didn't know San Francisco was portrayed like that. In my country we see it mostly as a sunny and lively city full of stereotypical gay people and hippies. Didn't know about Washington either. The only bad thing I've heard about it is that the traffic is horrible.

The stereotype I see for Paris is generally sophisticated, classy, a bit bohemian/artistic, and... okay, yes, rude, so I guess it just depends on what media you're exposed to?

The stereotype you're describing seems to come from Northern America and Australia/NZ, where a lot of people view France as this classy place where everyone is beautiful and everything (mainly because of movies like Midnight in Paris), while in my experience the negative stereotypes come mostly from Europe and the rest of France (and also from disappointed American tourists who just realized that Paris doesn't mean paradise).

Ah, true... I'm Australian myself, and a lot of the media I see is American. So I guess I picked up on those.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 09:56 am (UTC)(link)Ha, I had guessed Marseilles!
Bah, don't worry about it. Where I come from, we're portrayed as hicks with cows as far as the eye can see. Every place gets a more or less stereotyped reputation, it seems...
no subject
Yeah I guess, though some stereotypes are more negative than others.

And indeed, there's a big gap between "cities full of hippies and pretty people" and "intolerant rednecks who marry their own cousins"...

Indeed, and it's really frustrating to hear disappointed tourists spout disgusting things about us just because our country doesn't actually look like a Hollywood movie.
