The dad fish crossed an entire ocean to save his son and realized he was smothering his son despite thinking he was protecting him. Nemo saw his father risk everything to save him and realized that his father wasn't trying to ruin his life but protect him in the only way he knew how. Their relationship was built up and resolved perfectly.
Merida and her mother did not get that kind of build up. If they had, maybe I would have actually enjoyed the film.
