I think we overestimate how many people think the same way we do.

There are both many people who have never wished ill on anyone, and people who have.

There are people who meant it and people who were just getting carried away with their anger.

There are people who are capable of carrying out the threats and people who wouldn't.

There are people who would totally punch someone, people who would do more than that, and people wouldn't hurt anyone.

And so on and so forth.

It'd be interesting to make a real, large-scale scientific study to see how prevalent violent thoughts are, but until then we can only go through empiric evidence, which isn't very reliable and varies too much from one area to another.

I think that it's a good idea to try to purge yourself from all those thoughts once you had your cathartic "pretending this person had so and so happen to them" fantasy, but I won't think badly of anyone who has wished ill, as I have done it too, if the thoughts never went beyond the imaginary. There is something to be said for self-restraint.

i would suggest looking at google scholar results (i searched "prevalence of violent thoughts" and found some interesting studies), if you're still interested in that/want some hard data.

It is interesting indeed, but at a first glance it seems that it focuses on mental patients, suicidal victims, or people who acted out on those thoughts, rather than the general population.

Thanks for the suggestion, in any case!
