Say what you will about Mako and Asami, at least they went on dates and hung out together when they weren't fighting bad guys or on the lam. Presumably they talked about stuff other than sports and terrorism.

Urgh. Another crappy facet of Makorra: it's built up as The Awesome Romance between two characters we never see hanging out together for fun because they enjoy each other's company, nor do we even see much of them hanging out together for actual purposes, like their probending practices. Mako and Asami were shown on dates and interacting in friendly/romantic ways, and Korra and Bolin were shown on a kind-of-date and interacting in friendly ways, but Korra and Mako?

I confess, I often enjoy slow-burn, subtle romances in which both parties keep their feelings suppressed until bam! get-together scene all at once! But this? Can't enjoy this. >:( Not enough chemistry between the endgame partners, and too much chemistry shown between them with other people. And Mako's a dick.

Honestly, people are giving this so much slack...but it was realistic, IMHO. You can't choose who you fall in love with. I have friends who I get together great with, we have so mcch fun together, but I wouldn't ever date them because...I just don't feel that way about them. Korra fell for Mako, eventually Mako realized it wasn't Asami he was in love with, it was Korra. He still cares for Asami, he just doesnn't love her. (Also Mako and Asami only dated for three months, come on people! heh)

Yeah, but once the initial infatuation passes and seeing each other loses the novelty, will they have enough compatibility to stay together more than a few months or years?

It's the day-to-day interaction that makes or breaks those relationships.

No, no, I totally get that, and I wasn't trying to suggest it was weird that e.g. Korra didn't fall for Bolin, how dare she. But they could have done a better job establishing why Korra and Mako were attracted to each other, especially in such a way that led to grand declarations of love. It may be realistic that they just sort of do (I'd argue that at some point you get to know the person enough you could articulate some reasons, though) but that fails as a storytelling device.

Korra presumably had a decent amount of time around Mako with probending practices, but we didn't see much of that (and what we did see didn't exactly include even any background moments of them hanging out and laughing and just visibly enjoying being around each other). But the failed ships actually did show us moments like that. Where were Korra and Mako hanging out, having fun with each other? What we did get included Mako, just a few weeks previous in-story time, threatening to end his friendship (I say friendship; I didn't see particular strong evidence that the Krew are actually really friends yet) with Korra. Greeeeat. +other bad, uneven growth and stupid things.
