They didn't break up. People just made that up after an image leaked from the comic The Promise. They do have a fight in the comic but that's because Mai gets pissed Zuko is keeping secrets from her.

They do break up at the end of promise 2, actually. She breaks up with him because he was keeping secrets from her (Mainly seeing his father for advise without telling her) She learns this from -Suki- of all people, and yeah.

Wow, this sounds like something out of a telenovela. I'm kind of glad I haven't read the supplementary materials.
