Yes, they are real. And they are spectacular.

<3 for Seinfeld reference.

Sometimes I play this game. And then I realized... I don't really care. It'd be nice to know For Sure(TM), but that's mostly because I'm nosy. It doesn't make me like them any more or worse.

If it makes you feel better, though, look into what double eyelid surgery actually looks like (there are a few good before and after websites), what using the double eyelid glue/tape looks like when used. On the surgery websites there are often people who had the 'natural' crease when is very different looking, who wanted it made deeper. It helps get an idea of what is natural, what's natural with maybe some glue aid, and what is surgical.

Another aid in being a snoop is finding picture of whoever you're curious about with their eyes either half closed or completely closed. The look of the scar is very different from the natural crease people have on their eyelid when they're closed. I actually took pictures of myself to compare. XD

Also, if in pictures the depth of their eyelid crease seems to change from between, like. Publicity material to a fan taken shot of them at the airport, I would say that the use of the glue or tape is more likely.

Basically, I don't think it's really a big deal to be curious about it (obviously, given my track record), but that really shouldn't stop you from enjoying shows, music or movies that you might otherwise really like.

I am ignorant. What are you talking about?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
There's a crease in the upper eyelids of most non-Asian and some Asian people than some other Asian people don't have. Sometimes those people get cosmetic surgery to have the crease added. Various groups of people have Opinions about this practice.

It's really popular in certain East Asian countries - Korea among them - to have cosmetic surgery done to create double-folded eyelids. They think it's a lot prettier than not having it.

(not just stars, btw- lots of regular people do it, too)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
As an East Asian with natural double eyelids...this is kind of ridiculous, but it's also sad and true? I've had plenty of people ask why I had surgery done and/or tell me I'm not a "pureblooded" Asian because of my eyelids, whatever the hell that means.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
20%-25% of Koreans have natural double eyelids. And even if it's surgery, who cares? Sweet and savage Miss Park is awesome either way

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
????
I have no idea any cared about double/single eyelids outside of southeast/east Asia...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of South Koreans have double eyelids naturally. If they're Japanese, that's when you should get suspicious...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao stop.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
LOL OK, troll.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually heard Japanese people and weaboos say the opposite.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Most times, it's not natural. But at the end of the day, I've stopped caring. Seems like everyone likes to pretend that all the celebrities' double lids are natural when the majority of them aren't. And I've come to realize that if I don't think double lids are a big deal, I shouldn't get so worked up over which celebrity has natural double lids or fake ones.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
what the fuck does it matter if they are or not? You really care that fucking much what someone else decides to change about their own body?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised how supportive some people are being. I'm super against double eyelid idolization and surgery, but that's just me I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. I think that culture already says enough about how people should look, but at least makeup is something relatively harmless.
A society which actively promotes the idea that ugly people cannot ever be successful, and which encourages plastic surgery as a correction to that is pretty negative, in my opinion. Eyelids are only the beginning, too. Other stuff is also more dangerous - like the cheekbone-cutting surgery....

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's not the problem most people have with double eyelid bashing though. It's not that we disagree that it's a horrible thing that an entire society is of the opinion that if you don't have a certain small facial feature that you are ugly. It's that most people who go about it? Actively shame and mock and belittle the people who have done it and make horrible accusations and in some cases ruin celebrities lives.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Urgh. Okay, I didn't really know what goes on, since I don't hang around those fandom circles, mostly.
I'm pretty strongly against that kind of plastic surgery, but I'm also not about to attack the celebrities/people who are victims of the system. Korea's entertainment industry is a pretty tough place. Bashing is really not helping in any way :/

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Most people don't get surgery but they use a special glue, I think. So it's simply part of their make up routine.

I kinda stared at this secret going "...what?" for a while. Double eye-lids... never heard of this. Who gives a crap what anyone's eyelids look like, of all things?

It's a pretty big thing in East Asia
agentcthulhu: knitted yellow-green cthulhu in black suit and sunglasses (Default)

[personal profile] agentcthulhu 2012-07-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also pretty big in East Asian diaspora communities, especially the ones with strong ties to East Asian countries.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-05 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
East Asians are super shallow. They'll nitpick everything on a person's body and find a way to "perfect" it.
