Not a secret, considering everyone and their mother has complained about the same thing...

Actually, how widely-held is this opinion? It seems to be everybody's, but are there some dissenters?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say maybe 60/40? I've seen a lot of disappointment articulated really well, in the places I've been hanging, peppered with the occasional passionate defenses of Bryke's writing, and the fact that they only had 12 episodes to work with. There's also the sentiment that the complainers are comparing LoK too much to AtlA, which is fair.

It's pretty widely-held, but there are definitely some dissenters (who typically compare AtLA's series finale and the lion turtle to what happened at the end of LOK, at least from what I've seen.)

Dissenter here. It works if you remember Bryke thought Korra was only going to be a one-season miniseries, so things had to get condensed, way, way down, and most of the inner conflict and character building was happening in the background and offscreen.

This excuse does not work because it was still a lousy ending as a mini-series. The only reason I'm not completely furious is because they have a second season to redeem this horrible ending.

Another 'This'.

Seriously, if you have only 12 episodes to work with, don't try to cram in shit that is utterly unnecessary--nay, detrimental to the material you're working with.

The last 10-15 minutes of the finale were a train wreck that not only tied things up in an unsatisfying manner, but actually made Korra and Mako out to be gigantic assholes on various levels in the process.

[personal profile] diorama 2012-07-07 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
...That actually makes it much worse.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
You are actually DAMNING your argument than actually helping like diorama said.

If they had a 12 episode series, they shouldn't introduced so many plot points that they can't be solved sufficently in 12 episodes, I mean we had:

- Equalists/bending privilege, which was not really solved and ended pretty fucking sloppy with Amon's reveal as a bloodbender (which even made more plotholes like how bloodblending managed to mimic energybending?)

- Korra's issues with connecting with her spiritual side that made it hard to airbend. The Probending bits seemed like it was going to be a means to that goal, but that was pretty much dropped after finally putting off that one airbending method early on. The other time she bothered connecting to their spiritual side was finding out the mystery of Yakonne. But she manages to solve that because Mako was in danger of losing his bending? Not when Tenzin and his kids were, not when SHE was? And she did this with force... which was the problem in the first place. Let's not mention that Korra's projection of herself is tied up with her bending and being the Avatar not being really addressed ended up endorsing those beliefs being her the rest of her bending back.

- The love triangle... that wasn't necessary. If you were going to make a love triange, please don't just use it for a weak prop for the destined pair. Korra and Mako didn't really need it and when the pretense was over, Bolin was pushed aside and Asami would too if it wasn't for her issues with her father. I personally think, you can't pull off an effective love triangle with a 12-episode limit with so much other stuff ongoing on. Plus, it ended up putting the intended in a bad light, especially Mako with the derailment of his character.

All of that was not going to resolved in a 12-episode miniseries. A 24 episode series? It's possible, but not 12.

You just proved that the writing was bad for a 12 episode miniseries.

[personal profile] celestialchild 2012-07-07 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that it was a miniseries explains many of it's problems, but doesn't excuse them. That they had a limited number of episodes/minutes per episode to tell a story means they should have been that much more careful and precise about what elements to include, and which they should not. Instead, they lost sight of their priorities. They introduced complex social and personal issues and very important relationships (sans romance), but started tripping over themselves when they pushed the most insignificant plotline as if it was the fulcrum upon which the show spun (Love Triangle). Everything else got pushed aside in different capacities, so that in the end nothing felt as thoroughly accomplished and addressed as it should have been. It was as if the writers had only so many thoughts to give and they gave 90% to a needless romance.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like they started with a "mini-series" focus and then when they got the news that they would get another season they made a mish-mash of "multi-season"/"mini-series" plot pacing and it came out like... this.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thing is that they didn't get the season renewal until AFTER the episodes were done.

*cough*Madoka worked well in 12 episodes*cough*

No fucking excuse. They were just terrible writers. Great ideas, but terrible executioners.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
OP here, and I marked it secret because the few times I mentioned it online in other fandom places, I pretty much got my head bitten off. I was told that I should go easy on it because they only had one season to work with (not an excuse because this sucked as a mini-series finale as well as a season one finale) and that I was nitpicking.

I was even told by one person that how dare I dislike it because I didn't understand how much hard work goes into making a TV show. Yes, someone really said that to me. I was shocked too. Hard work does not mean it blindly gets my praise.

What places on the Internet are these? I've only really been in the fandom here.

Mostly the Legend of Korra Facebook group and a bit on DeviantArt.

ahhh. I don't go on dA a lot, and I do spend a lot of time on Facebook but that's not really a fandom thing for me.

For some reason though that makes a lot of sense. I have at least one friend irl who spends a good amount of time on Facebook and liked all the stuff I didn't like about LoK at the beginning. (Haven't talked to her about it recently.)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
You should hang out on Tumblr more. God, everyone has nitpicked the finale to death. Was it great? Nope. But it was pretty good. (I classify myself as a dissenter, for several reasons, but I do recognize it wasn't an amazing ending. Hell, I thought the original series ending was a cop-out. Energy-bending? C'mon. Aang should have killed the Fire Lord...) (I hate last-minute-superpowers...)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
But it was pretty good.

In my opinion it was flat-out bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
And you are entitled to your opinion. In my opinion, it was pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I wasn't thrilled with the original series' ending but, in my own opinion, it was a hell of a lot better than this finale.

Aang had a goal: defeat the Fire Lord without killing him. And he looked and worked for a solution. Yeah, I thought the giant lion-turtle teaching him spirit-bending was a bit of a cop-out but at least Aang did some work for it. He still had an awesome battle with the Fire Lord and even that one moment where he could have killed him but choose not to. Plus avoiding killing people fits with his character and was a moral dilemma that fit him.
