I think it was wrong of Triton to do that, but I kind of get it. He figured that if humans discovered them, they would try to hunt them down (because lbr, we totally would) and here Ariel is, collecting all this human shit and wanting to be ~part of their world~. I always thought it would have been like if my parents discovered I had a room full of Nazi paraphernalia (we're Jewish).

From Triton's POV, that human obsession would just end with Ariel being made into sushi or locked up or something. It was still wrong of him to terrify her like that though.

I can see your point completely, but a problem with that argument is that Ariel didn't see them that way, which I found strange. If Triton had explained from the beginning why humans were dangerous to their kind, instead of forbidding it, she might have understood his point a little more.

Triton was frightening in that scene, even if he regretted his actions after. He was the adult, and her father, and the king. He should have been able to control his actions better, instead of terrifying his teenage daughter.

Oh yeah, I agree with you. I think he was trying to shelter her by not saying something like "Look, I'm pretty sure these human things want to fucking kill us so why don't you stick around the palace?" but it backfired (and, hell, she probably would have still wanted to go near the surface anyway). I was just saying I sympathized with him, even if I didn't agree with what he did.

My impression is that this was not a new occurrence with her and that they've HAD that conversation already. Ariel just continues to go up there anyway, despite knowing how dangerious it is for their kind.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Hence that line from Triton at one point, "How many times must we go through this?" It's not new information for her, nor a new argument for them.

Oooh, that's actually such an interesting way of look at it. I never thought of it that way before!

I can't remember the movie so well. Were the merpeople afraid of humans or did Triton just want to keep his people away from the outsiders and keep his daughter under his control? Because if it was that way then his actions were more akin to an incredibly racist father destroying his daughter's records by black artists in an attempt to control her exposure to something he didn't like and want her to be influenced by.

I'm pretty sure he just thought they were dangerous. For a while, the popular theory was that Ariel's mother was killed by humans and Triton hated humans for it (this was later revealed to be the case in one of the lame movie sequels where it was revealed that the mother was crushed to death by a pirate ship by a pirate ship. I don't think it was intentional by the humans, but Triton seemed to either think it was or blamed the humans any way)

sa

Didn't mean to put "by a pirate ship" twice

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
pirate ships count twice :V

I don't remember the exact line, but he does that he doesn't want to "see his daughter dangling from a hook" or something similar. It's pretty clear that he sees humans as a real danger.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't want to see you dangling from some fish-eater's hook!"

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
...Mermaids are tasty?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
The exact exchange:

Triton: Seagull, was--oh! You went up to the surface again? Didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?!

Ariel: Nothing...happened.

Triton: Augh, Ariel! How many times must we go through this? You could have been seen by one of those barbarians--by one of those HUMANS!

Ariel: Daddy, they are NOT barbarians!

Triton: They are dangerous! Do you think I want to see my youngest daughter snared by some fish eater's hook?!

Ariel: I'm sixteen years old. I'm not a child anymore!

Triton: Don't you take that tone of voice with me, young lady! As long as you live under my ocean, you will obey my rules.

Ariel: But if you would just listen--

Triton: NOT ANOTHER WORD! And I don't ever want to hear of you going to the surface again. IS THAT CLEAR?

*Ariel makes a pouty face and swims away. Triton asks Sebastian if he was too hard on her, and Sebastian tells him no, and that leads to Triton appointing him to watch over Ariel and keep her out of trouble*

Yep. Completely forgot about that exchange. Triton was being a total douchecanoe terrifying his daughter and destroying her cave of wonders, but it seems he did have a reason to be scared and in his desperation to save his daughter he did a terrible thing.
