It's great you left.

But that just seems like some really bizarre logic on your dad's part, to be honest. He wants to stop you from leaving... so he burns everything you own so that you'll have nothing to lose if you gtfo and never come back.

Um...

It's not like psychotic abusers with anger issues usually act on logic or utilize the rational parts of their brain...

Abusers just want to find ANY way to hurt you or make you scared.

I relate to you OP. My own dad tore apart my whole bedroom and deleted everything on my laptop one day because 'he paid for it all' so he could destroy it if he wanted to.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so, so sorry that you went through that OP. People who defend Triton's actions in this scene terrify me. It must be nice not knowing what it's like to be scared and pleading while daddy goes on a rampage.

I don't have the same kind of history as you, OP, but that scene horrifies me too and I can barely watch it.

I was reminded of it in the scene in Brave where the Queen burns Merida's bow. I was so incredibly glad that in that movie, the Queen immediately felt horrified at her actions and pulled the bow out of the flames. It made me feel better, in a funny way. Like Disney was finally acknowledging that doing that is wrong no matter what.

Also, I'm so glad that you got out of that horrible situation!

Hi, OP. I also had an abusive "father," and though I didn't go through what you did with all of my things being burned, I still find that scene extremely triggering for very similar reasons.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it was wrong of Triton to do that, but I kind of get it. He figured that if humans discovered them, they would try to hunt them down (because lbr, we totally would) and here Ariel is, collecting all this human shit and wanting to be ~part of their world~. I always thought it would have been like if my parents discovered I had a room full of Nazi paraphernalia (we're Jewish).

From Triton's POV, that human obsession would just end with Ariel being made into sushi or locked up or something. It was still wrong of him to terrify her like that though.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that, OP. And I can sorta relate (as in certain movie scenes that trigger you). But like first commenter said up there, so glad you got away from there.

I'm sorry that happened to you and I'm glad you got out of there. That scene terrifies me, and I'm an adult - it's frightening.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched The Little Mermaid when I was 7, and that scene scared me as a child. I grew up with a scary abusive father, so I saw my father in Triton when I watched that scene.

What your father did to you was horrible. Your father sounds like a crazy freak. I'm relieved that you got away from that freak.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Echoing the chorus of "glad you got out of there", OP. Probably the best move.

Triton is a fictional character. The writers/story boarders moved him like a puppet to suit the story.

Your father was a real human being. He decided his own actions.

For me, that makes all the difference.

This is actually interesting. I remember when I first watched that scene I thought Triton was a great father because even when he was so angry he didn't raise a finger to her. My own father, one time he was very angry at me, slapped me over and over and it was a horrible experience trying to get away from him and protect myself. So I guess in my mind, any punishment that didn't involve bodily pain was better. I now realize that depending on the person's experience that isn't necessarily true and Triton was in fact an abusive parent.

I'm so sorry you still have that scar from that terrible time... I also know what it's like to live in complete terror and fear from the person was supposed to love you the most in this world. That horrible feeling of impotence, of utter fear when you don't have a minimun sense of security. It must have been hard for you to run and leave the only world you knew behind at such a young age, and I want you to know you were very brave.

I hope you're living your life without the scars in your heart giving you too much trouble. (I know mine are so hard to bear at times) I hope your life now is full of the emotional stability you surely lacked as a child. I hope...

And yeah. That scene? Make my stomach churn with I don't know-- pain? fear? terror? All I know is that scene punches me with a strong negative feeling I can't define but that is just as hard. Several years had to pass before I started to comprehend that scene in other that a purely emotional level...

I remember my mother once telling me about my father burning some things of hers that had belonged to my grandfather (her father). She was crying about it even though it had been like 20 years ago. She didn't leave, and I still think sometimes about how much better her life might have been if she had. :/

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Your father is a creep. I totally get why that scene would stir up negative emotions... it scared me enough and I've never been through anything close to that.

Hugs if you want them.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you went through that OP - I have a similar story, though not with my father.

Basically? My grandmother [I was living with her at the time for reasons I'd rather not go into] ended up with a new boyfriend who...basically decided he didn't like me living there. So he kicked me out, so that I was, literally, homeless for a time. The whole time he was doing that? My grandmother stood there and *smiled* while she watched.

Good thing you managed to leave! My situation was similar, only it was my mother who did the abuse, and it took me far too long to leave and cut my ties with her.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom would do this, pulling everything out of my closets and destroying things when she got mad. My parents did want me to leave after high school, but didn't want me to choose where I lived: their solution was to just not allow me to take driver's ed (they were incredibly religious and didn't want me to be able to survive on my own, they wanted me to get married to another member of their church and were pissed when I didn't have a boyfriend within six months).

Apparently they didn't realize that Grehound busses are still around... I was able to follow through with my own plans instead after almost a year of saving money, but it was hard as hell. My parents did eventually admit that not letting me learn to drive was to keep me from leaving the place they'd chosen for me. I didn't learn to drive until I was in my mid twenties.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
yes, it's abusive. it used to really bother me as a kid when people didn't respect their children's property, because i recognised just how abusive that scene was. possessions AREN'T just possessions, they're an extension of you, and trodding all over someone by interfering with their stuff is immensely disrespectful and abusive.

The first time I watched TLM as an adult, that scene creeped the fuck outta me (when previously it'd only gotten a standard "boo, what a mean dad"). It's one of the reasons I think having Triton for a king is really bad news. Impulsive, violent and prejudiced, *plus* all-powerful? No, thanks.
