Korra...did not tell him she couldn't because of Asami. It was because she had lost her bending, and wasn't interested in anything else, being broken and all that. He didn't blow Asami off. His friend (The person he really was in love with, but was too singleminded to realize) was almost murdered. He doted on her, because she needed help. He broke up with Asami and she forgave him.

I love Korra, and I love the canon ships/plot. Haters gonna hate, I guess.

He did blow Asami off when she tried to initiate a conversation with him about how he really felt about Korra. And don't give me that "he doted on her in a totally platonic way" argument since it was very obviously done that way for Makorra reasons (what with Mako being, apparently, the only person to really care at all about caring for Korra).

Not too sold on him being Korra's friend in the first place, either. Already said it upthread, but the Krew did not really come together very well on an emotional level, even when Korra was doing dangerous stuff like confronting Amon one-on-one and did Mako or Bolin fuss then? Hmph. Plus the whole "drop the investigation or this friendship is over!" thing. Okay, so he needed her to disappear to get the kick in the pants to realize how much he cared. I still don't see much evidence of them being really friends before that (and teammates =/= friends).

Also, apropos of nothing, that was a weak break-up that, imo, could have read as much as a reconciliation as a break-up. >:| (lol, I sort of want fic in which Mako thought they broke up but Asami thought they hadn't, just to lampshade that stupid non-event)

... that was a breakup? Seriously? I know some people said that it was a nod to Scott Pilgrim when Scott and Knives broke up... but Scott eventually owned up on how he treated her and at least CLEARLY broke up with her...

They don't say "I love you" they say "I care about you" Then she kisses him on the cheek, not the lips. It was pretty obviously a break up.

Or alternately, they'd been fighting and uneasy in their relationship, and before Mako went off to do dangerous stuff, they wanted to make up a bit and say they still cared (I don't think they'd said they loved each other before, and the lack of a declaration of love does not mean much) but since things still weren't quite okay, cheek kiss instead of lip kiss.

I did have the impression they were breaking up, because I was really hoping Bryke would remember to include an official break before anymore Makorra happened so I was watching for it, but it was still ambiguous. "I'm sorry things got so crazy" is not the same as, say, "I'm sorry it didn't work out between us" (and it's definitely not the same as "I'm sorry I've been stringing you along and made things worse than they had to be," Mako). Not is it the same as "Mako/Asami, you're really awesome, but I don't think this relationship is right for us anymore."

And going by the other replies in this little thread, it certainly wasn't obvious to everyone (and with such non-committal dialog I'm not surprised).

Yeah, I thought it was a reconciliation *I care for you, I'm helping Korra but my heart is with you" moment

So the Makorra blindsided me. Like, I know Korra still had a crush because she said he was amazing, but the finale had led me to think he was going to pull on his big boy pants and fix things with his true love tm

I was impressed when Korra turned him down later. Avatar'd, then suddenly wild makorra appears.

I couldn't follow this 'romance'. It kept being on and off and on and off. :/

Haha, yes, I cheered when Korra didn't bother with Mako's sudden declaration. Except then he had to go following her to wherever she ran off with Naga. (...at the South Pole...without putting on a heavy coat first...) X|

...Except he 'doted on her' to the point he was pretty much just getting new tea - at a communal table - just for *her*. Remember, he said 'KORRA needs more tea' not 'WE need more tea'. Seeing as it was a communal meal? That actually does speak volumes about where his priorities lie [add in the fact Korra was pretty much fine by that point? Even more so].

As far as 'blowing Asami off'...He kinda did. You can take care of, even 'dote' on someone and still have time for other people. Without them even feeling abandoned, which she did seem to feel. It wasn't as if there weren't other people around to help take care of her. I mean...they show him watching her while she slept - so it wasn't just times that she'd be likely to need someone there.

As far as breaking with Asami - maybe. Unless it's clarified in an interview somewhere, then it was left remarkably vague as to if they were still together or not. So, for all we know they still could be dating [that was the impression I'd gotten, honestly]. We just honestly don't know at this point.

And for all this ^? I don't hate the ship Makorra - I don't ship it, and I do think it's badly written [the whole love triangle was], but I don't hate it.
