The relationship wasn't handled well at all, but is not nearly as awful as fandom makes him out to be, for real. He's half a jerkbender, but not an abuser, come on.

I don't think they meant for Mako to be an abuser, but he really comes across as one, more specifically an emotional abuser. I don't blame fandom for feeling that way. Blame Bryke for their shitty characterization of Mako.

All the Mako bashing makes my soul hurt. I've never seen a character so hated on by such a high proportion of the fandom. I like the guy, personally. He's not my favorite character in the series and he isn't perfect but the more people bash him, the more and more it irritates me.

I feel like all the people who are pissed off are taking their irritation about it having a romance at all and/or the romance not being the more Katara/Aang like Korra/Bolin out on Mako and it just doesn't seem right.

You know, I think the hate is excessive
but I don't think it's accurate or fair to dismiss the dissatisfaction with the character/ship because it's not like "Pairing X." I didn't care for Kataang, am neutral on Borra, but I still dislike Mako/Korra because the pairing is so poorly developed, and it ruins everyone involved in the stupid triangle. Plus it took time away from the plot.

That aside, the "you're only angry because it's not your OTP!" argument is so tiring. No, we're angry because he's a shittily written character and what's worse is that the creators honestly expected us to root for him. To feel sorry for him because he ~couldn't sort his feelings out~ and was so torn and confused or whatever.
And fandom is sitting here being pissed that they're supposed to swallow such cheap romance when there's so much in the goddamn story that could've and should've been fleshed out instead of wasting time on the Mako Feels Parade. And no, this is not me being against romance. There was romance that could've been perfectly fine, but unfortunately it was Mako+Plot Device and we can't possibly have our only conventionally attractive male cast without the main character!

So yeah. No.

I feel a bit guilty for this, but a part of me thought it was refreshing that fandom was spewing forth its hate for a male character rather than a female one. It's even more amazing when you consider that it's all love-triangle related, as usually it's the girls who are held entirely responsible for that sort of thing.

Can we not with the Die for Our Ship accusations because all it does is derail the real issue here and bring out butthurt Makorra shippers to support you.

I shipped Makorra early on but really fucking bad writing ruined it for me. And I am far from being the only one who's an ex-Makorra shipper.

Er, no, that's not why people are pissed off about Mako. They're pissed off because he was a self-righteous douche who never had to answer for his behavior and treated the women in the show badly, and in the end his behavior was glorified and rewarded.

Also, 90% of his character was defined around the two romantic relationships he had. There isn't much else to like, after that, and what's there is pretty basic.

Korra...did not tell him she couldn't because of Asami. It was because she had lost her bending, and wasn't interested in anything else, being broken and all that. He didn't blow Asami off. His friend (The person he really was in love with, but was too singleminded to realize) was almost murdered. He doted on her, because she needed help. He broke up with Asami and she forgave him.

I love Korra, and I love the canon ships/plot. Haters gonna hate, I guess.

I think the hate is overkill, but fandom in general seems to run on hyperbole most of the time. That being said, however, I don't particularly like Mako myself. Sadly, I lost some respect for Korra through this love triangle, too. The characterization just got stupid for the both of them, and they're really not as fun as they were at the beginning of the series.

I liked Mako fine. And I don't think he was such a horrible person to Asami and Korra, I think he is a teenage boy who is struggling with his feelings. le gasp.

Eeeehhhh I don't hate on Mako. I hated how he was written after episode 5 and how he pretty much got away with Emotional Infidelity and canon made it ok for him to do so. Canon never really explored why he wasn't okay with dating Korra, even if she was emotionally available and he was willing. And they were gonna hook up in the finale anyway. :|||

I wish the writers would stop trying to put the main characters in romantic relationships with each other.

Yeah, yeah, they connect through their experiences, teenagers fall in love in real, etc., but for fuck's sake, I hate Aang/Katara (not a Zutarian either, btw) and Sokka/Suki, and just reading through f!s is enough to know that I would despise Makorra (I don't like cheaters and most love triangles in general).

The romance was terrible.

Not just Mako, everything related to it was a mess.

At first I didn't feel anything for Mako because they completely derailed his character after episode 4 in favor of the love triangle. I couldn't get enough of a grasp on who he was enough to develop any feelings towards him, and most of my frustration is on the writers for that.

But dang, if they would have just once have him earnestly apologize instead of his evasive "sorry your crazy story was hard to believe/sorry things got confusing" apologies, then maybe I would have actually sympathized with him a bit by the end.

Plus all the BS with the "he's just a teenage boy" crap means squat when he never learns anything from his mistakes. When a child colors on the wall it's usually because they're "just a kid" and don't know any better, but the parents won't let him get off scott free because if they did the kid would never realize what he did was wrong. Why is Mako any different when it comes to hurting people feelings and leading them on?

One of the many things that bothers me about Makorra and Mako in general is that Mako only got romantic ship teasing moments with Korra when Korra was at her weakest. She's confused by her first crush having grown up pretty isolated and kisses him. She's half-dead from exhaustion and being kidnapped and he carries her off. She has her bending taken away. Mako's all over her THEN, but not when she's being badass. Know who's all over Korra when she's being badass? Bolin.
A guy who's attracted to weakness is not good boyfriend material.
Well, maybe "weakness" isn't the word I'm looking for, but he seemed more comfortable with Korra when she was fitting into his preconceived notions of femininity, like Asami, instead of when she was taking care of herself. Note that when Asami revealed herself to be a badass herself, and Korra got kidnapped and all weak, Mako started ignoring Asami and fawning over Korra.
