I liked Mako fine. And I don't think he was such a horrible person to Asami and Korra, I think he is a teenage boy who is struggling with his feelings. le gasp.

I think most of the complaints about this whole shebang is not Mako's feelings, for what they are - it's fine to be confused; it happens! - but it was that he wasn't honest about them. He didn't let Asami know he was feeling confused, or own up to having kissed Korra - he tried to redirect the attention to his brother rather than say that yeah, it happened, and have an honest dialogue with the girl he's supposed to be dating. He pretty much strung both girls along without giving either one a definitive answer. Not having one, too, is totally fine and understandable. But while you're figuring things out, it's probably a good idea to take a break from your relationship until you know whom you're planning to dedicate your affections.
He has real, understandable teenage feelings, but he handles them poorly. I think that's where the hate/dislike/whatever comes from.
(Also, cautioning his brother that Korra was off limits after seriously considering dating her himself, and then going on to date Asami while still leaning towards le Avatar kind of reeks of not-cool-bro)

100% agreed on the not being honest bit. And you know what? Sometimes that happens too; but the part that made it really upsetting for me as a main canon pairing was that his behavior was glorified and rewarded - he got the girl in the end, she was happy with it (why the fuck did she trust him, honestly?) and everything was a-ok.

tl;dr it's ok to have feelings, it's not ok to lie but we all fuck up, but it's REALLY not ok to make that lying look like an ok thing in the end

eh yeah, i agree. i still think he was a bit of a dick but at the same time he's a teenager getting caught up in a war and i did kind of agree with him telling asami they should wait to talk out their relationship problems. he should have apologized right there though and promised asami he wanted to talk about their problems.

honestly mako's only real crime is he jerked korra and asami around. he isn't nearly as bad as fandom thinks.

I don't know about you, but if a guy's two-timing a chick and being unrepentant about it in high school, he would be considered as a major asshole.

See it's one thing to be unfortunate be hung up on two girls while dating one, it's another to keep stringing them around and don't own up to it when you get called out by the one you are dating.

Plus Mako is 18, so stop with 'HE IS A TEENAGER!' bullshit.
