All the Mako bashing makes my soul hurt. I've never seen a character so hated on by such a high proportion of the fandom. I like the guy, personally. He's not my favorite character in the series and he isn't perfect but the more people bash him, the more and more it irritates me.

I feel like all the people who are pissed off are taking their irritation about it having a romance at all and/or the romance not being the more Katara/Aang like Korra/Bolin out on Mako and it just doesn't seem right.

You know, I think the hate is excessive
but I don't think it's accurate or fair to dismiss the dissatisfaction with the character/ship because it's not like "Pairing X." I didn't care for Kataang, am neutral on Borra, but I still dislike Mako/Korra because the pairing is so poorly developed, and it ruins everyone involved in the stupid triangle. Plus it took time away from the plot.

Definitely. I don't hate Mako as a character, or hate Makorra on principle (indeed initially I thought it was gonna be more interesting to watch than Kataang) but... oh LORD they can not write main character romance right.

Borra is actually the Zutara 2.0. Giving Bolin way too much backstory that never actually happened in the show (He's hurting on the inside! No one has ever been able to crack him but Korra!) Despite the fact he -never- shows romantic interest for Korra past ep5, Borra shippers post random faces or interpretations of how he's still silly to Korra (He's silly to everyone, but okay) to mean he's still pinning for her. I love how he states in.the.damn.show that he's over it.

It's even more hilarious that Borra shippers, at least a lot of them, are kataang/maiko shippers. Some BNFs, even. That tore Zutara shippers apart for the same behavior they're doing now.

That aside, the "you're only angry because it's not your OTP!" argument is so tiring. No, we're angry because he's a shittily written character and what's worse is that the creators honestly expected us to root for him. To feel sorry for him because he ~couldn't sort his feelings out~ and was so torn and confused or whatever.
And fandom is sitting here being pissed that they're supposed to swallow such cheap romance when there's so much in the goddamn story that could've and should've been fleshed out instead of wasting time on the Mako Feels Parade. And no, this is not me being against romance. There was romance that could've been perfectly fine, but unfortunately it was Mako+Plot Device and we can't possibly have our only conventionally attractive male cast without the main character!

So yeah. No.

Now, I love Bolin. The kid is adorable as hell. But...he is shittily written, as you put it. His only purpose is to spout cutesy oneliners and mug the camera. That's it. Yet he's loved, despite that.

All the hate comes from the almost insane love affair the fandom has with Asami. Had Mako never dated Asami I guarantee he would not be hated NEAR as much as he is now.

But hey, I'm sure the fandom wouldn't embrace a boy who forced himself onto a confused girl character. And then he had a plot device that made him not have to sacrifice anything and get the girl who was confused only a few episodes before. With no resolution for his selfish behavior...Oh, wait.

I feel a bit guilty for this, but a part of me thought it was refreshing that fandom was spewing forth its hate for a male character rather than a female one. It's even more amazing when you consider that it's all love-triangle related, as usually it's the girls who are held entirely responsible for that sort of thing.

Most of the Mako haters I've seen also ship Borra. So...take that "not having to do with a love triangle" thing with a grain of salt. If Mako had stayed with Asami, Borra could have happened, totally! I've heard it so many times, even from BNFs. It makes me roll my eyes constantly at the hypocrisy of it all.

I agree, it's so refreshing. Even the most staunch "canon pairings = perfection" fans are not having any of the Makorra business. Shitty writing is shitty writing. I'm just concerned that Bryke won't be able to act on the feedback since they've finished writing season 2 before the outcries became loud.

Can we not with the Die for Our Ship accusations because all it does is derail the real issue here and bring out butthurt Makorra shippers to support you.

I shipped Makorra early on but really fucking bad writing ruined it for me. And I am far from being the only one who's an ex-Makorra shipper.

Er, no, that's not why people are pissed off about Mako. They're pissed off because he was a self-righteous douche who never had to answer for his behavior and treated the women in the show badly, and in the end his behavior was glorified and rewarded.

Also, 90% of his character was defined around the two romantic relationships he had. There isn't much else to like, after that, and what's there is pretty basic.
