- With the whole murder/suicide thing I don't think they wanted the end the show on a double downer.
- It's still a kid's show and I understand they wanted a classic happy ending.
- The only alternative would have been a very clear set-up for the next season, but I actually suspect they don't yet know where they're going with that; and that might have forced them to rush the actual finale more.
So yeah, while I do find it disappointing a bit, I can sort of see why that happened.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)I quite honestly was expecting the glowy Avatar heal all twist the second we were seeing people getting their bending taken. And, while it's disappointing that it was clearly sorta rushed. They basically did what they had to do to make sure everyone got their happy ending by the end of the season

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 02:33 am (UTC)(link)It wouldn't be a double downer if Aang helped Korra realize that she wasn't her bending and can still be a great Avatar regardless. And would end on a hopeful note that way (and leave room for a second season if needed).

That reason kinda falls flat when they wanted to make the show more appealing to an older audience too and there was a murder-suicide on the show.

Open ends aren't bad if done correctly, like that Korra, only equipped with her ability to airbend to become a fully realized Avatar and renewed confidence in herself who be an great way to end it. Plus that reasoninf falls flat that they left numerous plotlines open anyway. Especially the Equalists plotline, which was a major one.
It's easier to chalk it up with just plain terrible writing.

I can think of another possible alternative: rewrite the events in such a way that Korra loses her bending before the final episode, and spend at least part of one episode focusing on her resolving to deal with it. And if she absolutely had to get her bending back for a happy ending, maybe her resolution to be a good Avatar without those elements and such would help her resolve her identity outside of her bending and thus get her head in shape for some meditating and Avatar-chatting, at which point Aang could still help her out. Still kind of an easy out, but potentially more satisfying simply by addressing the fallout a little for more than, like, 2 minutes.
