I've been there OP. I was big into musical theater for awhile and got fed up with never being able to try out for the lead because I'm not a first soprano.

Fuck that, lower voices are more interesting anyways.

It's the Soprano myth. Somehow, somewhere everyone gets the ideas that soprano's are the best/hardest/prettiest. I think it's because they get lead parts in opera, but I could be wrong.

However, contralto is literally my fave and Marion Anderson my hero.

I think it might be because a true operatic soprano is actually really, really rare - most of the times in Opera a mezzo soprano is actually doing the parts that were written for a true soprano, so it really *would* be harder for them to sing the parts.

Seriously! I'm an alto with a decent range, and the other female singer in the band keeps wanting me to sing the soprano part as a harmony vocal because she can't hit it anymore (boo smoking for 20 years). I'm okay with that, but I'd really rather she let me sing in the more comfortable part of my range, and I think I sound *so much better* down there (if I'm pushing to hit the high notes I tend to go flat).

Go OP! I'm an alto-contralto, too, and I've learned to love my range (and I really just sing for fun). One fun thing about having a low range: the songs tend to sultrier, which can be a blast.
