It's the Soprano myth. Somehow, somewhere everyone gets the ideas that soprano's are the best/hardest/prettiest. I think it's because they get lead parts in opera, but I could be wrong.

However, contralto is literally my fave and Marion Anderson my hero.

I think it might be because a true operatic soprano is actually really, really rare - most of the times in Opera a mezzo soprano is actually doing the parts that were written for a true soprano, so it really *would* be harder for them to sing the parts.
