OT, Because I have no one else to whine to, FS...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm taking summer classes, and my sociology professor is black. I'm white. She's also an awesome counselor at the school, who has helped me through a number of situations over the past year or so. So we know each other pretty well, outside of class. It's the first time I've had her as a teacher though.

I have homework that requires me to read a bunch of essays about race and how oppressive white society is to African Americans, and then answer a bunch of questions. And I've gotten most of them, but I cannot answer the last two (race/class discrimination, and negative consequences of interracial marriage) because there is no way to word them without pointing the finger at someone, and I just cannot do it. I'm going to take a deduction on the paper because I don't want to come off looking like a racist douchebag. And I know, I already look like one for getting worked up over this, but I don't know wtf to do...

You feel uncomfortable because you may end up pointing in a POC's direction and be branded as a racist? Hm. Could you talk to other classmates and see how they feel about it/are answering?

No, because the assignment is due tomorrow. I know I should have tried to sort this out days ago, but I have a horrible social anxiety and my instinct is just to clam up and not draw attention to myself. It's one of the things the teacher/counselor was helping me work through.

SA

Also, it feels like since it's not my experience, I have no place making commentary on it. Like, I'd never actually get it right because I've never experienced it. If that makes any sense...

This, if you ask me is one of the worst things to come out of all the !fail-wank. You can == and SHOULD -- have opinions on things! And maybe sometimes your opinion is formed based on incomplete or erroneous information thanks to your life experiences, but that's what school is for. That's how you learn things and grow into a human with a broader understanding of the world.

Answer your questions. Learn something.

Not OP, but, I'm assuming there's the mention of negative consequences of interracial marriage. As far as I've seen, it's not just white parents that object/reject their children when they marry someone nonwhite (Mostly black parents, as far as I've seen. I've seen interracial children being treated badly, too, because they weren't "true black")

When my white father married my black mother, most of the objection came from her side of the family. Even now, I get comments on how I 'pass' from my aunt, and we have roughly the same skin color. :(

Maybe it'll help if you point your finger a little to every direction, since there's not just one place to point it imo. Just... don't make too many assumptions - make sure to point out all the contributing factors.
Whatever you do, make sure to mention in your paper that since you're white, you don't necessarily posses the same insight a black person/POC might have. If I was your teacher I'd be cool with that.

(And btw, especially interracial marriage can have negative consequences on both sides, so I'd be careful with this. Race/class discrimination is a lot more blatant, so I wouldn't worry too much about that one.)

Maybe if you have to point a finger in one direction you could go into some detail about how society and history may be part of the cause behind it? Then it would be less finger-pointing and more about how the history of oppression has affected both sides.

I mean we're talking about racial minorities in general here, not just black people, right? Because speaking as someone in an interracial marriage, I have experienced some awkward moments around Hispanic/Latino individuals before. Usually it's someone trying to convince me (but it's really like they're trying to convince themselves) that my husband is actually white and not "true Hispanic" or whatever because he married me. Or because he can't speak Spanish anymore (people lose language skills if they don't constantly use them -- he's been picking it back up after we moved from Tennessee to Texas, though).
