... was based on a 100+-year-old fandom that has been known to scrutinize every little detail about it, and has been doing so for decades. If the people who decided to make this show aren't okay with that, maybe they should try to make up a whole new show with original characters and ideas.

Well, as others have said (both defending and condemning the show), they're doing it to glom off the popularity of the Sherlock Holmes name. Fine, you do that, but then you gotta be willing to take the bad with the good.

And they tried this same series in either the '80's or '70's, I remember watching it, with a woman Holmes who was a psychiatrist and 'Sherlock' was her patient (and a detective who'd gone nuts, IIRC. I can't even find it by looking through Google, but I remember the series and how much it made me give a sidelong look).

I think it only had 3-4 episodes before it was pulled, which is probably why I can't find anything on it anywhere.

You're conflating a couple of Holmes "adaptations" there. Mental patient!Holmes with a woman doctor was a 1971 theatrical film called "They Might Be Giants." It was actually quite good in it's own way, owing as much to Don Quixote as Sherlock Holmes.

In 1987 CBS did a pilot called "Return of Sherlock Holmes." Victorian Sherlock was defrosted and his companion was Jane Watson, a private investigator and descendent of Dr. Watson. There was just the one episode.

In 1994 CBS did a pilot called "1994 Baker Street." Victorian Sherlock was defrosted and his companion was Dr. Amy Wimslow, no relation to Watson. There was just the one episode.
