I'll probably be more insulted than anything else.

As for a woman playing John Watson, one of my biggest issues is that she had better still be a war veteran. Being a soldier and a doctor was a big part of what made Watson who he was. I don't want to have to immediately go all "Fuck you, you bastards!" in the first minute when they change the character because they think it will be easier and-

I want to like it. But the guy playing Sherlock looks like a douchebag, and I am upset at that.

I kind of disliked it when I heard Lucy Lui explaining that it meant that the Sherlock/Watson dynamic got to be different, because now girl/boy.

Because all I can think is that it's "well, now we can have romantic tension" which...really, you think you're the first example of romantic subtext in the Sherlock/Watson relationship? Or else it's "well, she's more of a mother to him" in which case...ugh.

Honestly, it would be a bigger step forward for feminism if there is absolutely no romantic tension between them whatsoever.

Every person shitting on Elementary BEFORE IT HAS EVEN AIRED needs to get a grip. It's not a canonical version of the ACD books, it's not an adaptation of Sherlock (which doesn't even follow the ACD books--hell, even Moffat's convinced ACD actually liked Holmes when Holmes hated Sherlock enough to attempt to kill him off), and no one's said it was ~feminist. (Not even people making fun of crazy Tumblr Sherlock stans on Tumblr has said it was a ~feminist cure all.) Elementary might just be, at the very least, a popular show, and if it gets at least a second season on CBS, all the Elementary haters in fandom as well in the media will have to deal with it.

I feel like you can't win with anything related to this show. For example: you can want them to not get together in this adaptation because it would be refreshing to see a female and a male be friends without a romantic relationship, but if you ship holmes/watson in all other 'verses then people will think you're a misogynist for not shipping them in this adaptation. Or fetishizing (is that a word?) gay relationships or something along those lines.

I wish this show would just hurry up and air so that people can actually discuss this with conclusive evidence as to the nature of the characters. I am so over the batshit arguments. Both the Sherlock fandom and the Elementary fandom are being ridiculous. (Sherlock fandom for hating and raging on an adaptation that hasn't even aired yet, and the Elementary fandom for defending an adaptation that hasn't even aired yet. The defenders of it might actually end up hating it, who knows?) There are just alarmingly aggressive people on both sides and it is exhausting tbh.

IKR? I'm not really looking forward to it all that much because it seems like a pretty basic procedural, but the ~ironic stans~ who are liking it just to be contrary will be possibly more annoying than the hardcore haters. But they'll lose interest pretty fast.

Negative BBC Sherlock fans: Seriously stop whining about Elementary. It hasn't aired yet and it has barely anything to do at all with your show. If you're angry on Moffat's behalf, well, Moffat was ASKED BY CBS to do an adaptation for America and he turned them down so he's a dick for complaining that there's an American Sherlock Holmes now. This show isn't taking any money away from him, because people always want more Sherlock Holmes, so there's no reason to be angry on his behalf. If you're angry because it's 'taking the gay away,' well you're going to be really angry if Mary Morstan comes along in Series 3. If you are planning on not liking Elementary already, then don't watch it, and stop complaining about it, because it has almost nothing to do with Sherlock and you're clogging up my tumblr feed with your complaining about not-Sherlock.

Positive BBC Sherlock fans: Don't get too excited. It hasn't aired yet. The most you can honestly feel right now is happy that you have something to hold you over til series 3.

Elementary "fans": You have nothing to be a fan of besides a three minute commercial and one good review from. . .idk I saw it somewhere and I'm not going to look it up right now. You can't even say your show is good as an adaptation because it hasn't aired yet.

tl;dr: CALM YO TITS EVERYONE. This show hasn't aired yet, so at least relax some judgement on it until it does?

The thing about Watson being the female one is problematic in itself:
If they stick to the original characterisation, she would be mostly a fairly useless Holmes fangirl who is in awe with everything he does and completely clueless about how he came to his conclusions. If they change it so she is really a strong female character, there is a risk of amping her awesomness so much it's getting ridiculous and doesn't have anything to do with the original character anymore. And if that happens, I don't know why they even bothered to try basing it on Sherlock Holmes.
