I'll probably be more insulted than anything else.

As for a woman playing John Watson, one of my biggest issues is that she had better still be a war veteran. Being a soldier and a doctor was a big part of what made Watson who he was. I don't want to have to immediately go all "Fuck you, you bastards!" in the first minute when they change the character because they think it will be easier and-

(deep breath)

I want to like it. But the guy playing Sherlock looks like a douchebag, and I am upset at that.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least you aren't screaming about Watson's war injury, which was so important to his character that ACD couldn't be fucked to remember where the injury was supposed to be.

Point. I liked that the BBC version addressed that as the limp being a psychosomatic reaction to the actual injury in his shoulder. Very nicely done.

I meant more that, well, I thought being a veteran gave John that sharp edge that helped him keep up with Sherlock and his insulting ways. Maybe he wasn't as clever, but there was something in him that had been torn apart and fixed wrong, enough that Sherlock's oddness fit with him. I love their partnership.

I heard she wasn't which ticked me off so much I've abandoned any thought of this series unless I get an all clear from someone braver than I.

I just don't understand why she wouldn't be. Hi, welcome to the modern world, where women can join the military and go to war.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. As a woman pursuing a career in the military I feel almost personally offended. Most of the awesome veterans I know who I look up to, based my decision to enlist off of, and have helped me through this process are women.

Me too! I'm going Air Force, hopefully. (Fingers crossed) What about you? My dad is in the Army, and he forbid me from joining them.

I think this exact reason is why is pisses me off. I want to join the military in a couple years(Air Force Academy, *fingers crossed), and a big part of me feeling confident about is the number of assurances and help I've gotten from fellow women in the service/vetss. So fuck you and your gender sterotypes; women can serve in the military just as capably as men. You don't have to change a big part of Watson's canon just because ~ooooohhhh, she's a ~giiiirrrlll~

And also still can't fight on the frontlines!

Ha ha. No. Yes. But no.

Only in the United States military, and only in an official capacity, which is finally changing. Women are now being integrated into combat positions.

But women do get involved in combat, all the time. This current war is a war without battle lines, and plenty of women have unofficially been participating combatants in skirmishes. Women get injured, and fight to the last one, and die in this war, just like the men do. There's no reason why a woman, especially a medically trained one, would not have seen combat in this war.

Well, they made Sherlock a recovering addict who moved to NYC. (Yes, he was a user in the stories but never a recovering addict who moved overseas to sober up.) So, I am not shocked that they would change Watson in such a way. I chalk it up to, "I have to see how the story is handled before I make up my mind."

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of with you on waiting to see how it's handled but I've been burned. So burned before.

Also, for me the addict angle is very much a part of his character. Choosing to place the storyline earlier in his development seems to be pretty different from just erasing major character points.

Sorry, but everything 'Watson' has been stripped

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, she's not a war veteran and her medical license has been revoked!

...Then what was the POINT of doing this show? Is Sherlock a social butterfly?

Re: Sorry, but everything 'Watson' has been stripped

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
They couldn't get the rights to Sherlock. Simple as that.

Re: Sorry, but everything 'Watson' has been stripped

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What. Why? Has any other Watson incarnation been stripped of his medical license? Wasn't even frickin' mouse Watson a doctor?

Has any other Watson incarnation been stripped of his medical license?

Not that I've heard of (though there have been a few unconventional Watsons, including a few who weren't doctors at all).

Wasn't even frickin' mouse Watson a doctor?

Yep. He was also a veteran, for that matter.

Yeah, I really don't like that idea--not because it's not ~exact to the original stories or whatever, but because it kinda feels like they're taking away her 'strength' (not in a physical sense, but in a career/accomplishment sense) so she won't overshadow Sherlock too much. Like, he's 'damaged' because of his addiction and troubles with the law or whatever, but she has to be worse off so he's not intimidated. Because she's a woman now, she can't 'outrank' him. Noooooot here for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
From what I saw in the trailers she's a former surgeon but no mention of military background.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Jonny Lee Miller also made me side eye so hard. I don't think I've ever seen him in something that makes me feel like he could pull this off. Maybe I'll be pleasantly shocked but I just can't see it yet. I feel like Lucy Liu would be a better casting for that role. Even if they made her play it as a dude.

I didn't even like him as Mr. Knightley. That's a bad thing.

Not even Trainspotting? He played an addict there and now he is playing an addict here.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Addict isn't exactly the defining characteristic of Holmes. If I had to make a list I don't think it would make my top ten.

The nonnie who has seen the pilot above would like to note that he was my favorite part about it. (I went in knowing nothing about him.) I didn't expect to like him as much as I did.
