I just don't understand why she wouldn't be. Hi, welcome to the modern world, where women can join the military and go to war.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. As a woman pursuing a career in the military I feel almost personally offended. Most of the awesome veterans I know who I look up to, based my decision to enlist off of, and have helped me through this process are women.

Me too! I'm going Air Force, hopefully. (Fingers crossed) What about you? My dad is in the Army, and he forbid me from joining them.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Marines. My mother also forbid me from enlisting in the Army as well! A lot of people have said "At least it's not the army" when they find out my plans. I lol a little and then feel bad. :(

Really? That's impressive. I've only known one girl to join the Marines, a girl who used to work at the plant nursery I work at. It's a scary thought. I'm not hard enough to even dare go for the Marines.

My dad wouldn't because he said women have more opportunities in the Air Force than the other branches.

*butting in* My dad was obsessed with the idea that I *NOT* join the Navy(most likely because he watched too much JAG), but he said nothing about the other branches. But I was never really interested in the Army; too boring(no offense to Army fans!). The Marines was my other choice, but I decided that the Air Force would be a better fit.

My grandfather is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy, and he sulked for a week after I decided on the Air Force. He was very disappointed in me.

I have a great uncle who's a Navy vet and he's always trying to sell me on the Navy, but as much as I love ships and water and I'm sure becoming a Navy pilot would open a lot of doors...I'm just not crazy about wearing dress whites. :P

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom is a diehard Marine wife (weird because he left when I was two) and I think she would disown me if I went Navy. I made a joke about it once and her face terrified me.

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-07-09 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL oh my gosh your mom. XD
I don't know why, but I was just never interested in the Navy. My brother is probably gonna join the Navy(or Marines, if he decides he can handle it), and I just don't see what he sees in it.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
My brother talks about following me into the Marines and I have to keep reminding him Call of Duty is not accurate to RL. He would do terribly. He hates waking up early and doing anything anyone says and is the most opinionatedly combative person I know.

Seeing him in boot camp would be hilars if it couldn't negatively impact his life!

I'm scared of the ocean. There's no way I could be on a boat for six months at a time. My youngest sister wants to go the Naval Academy though (she's seven), so we haven't completely let the family down.

The best employer I ever had was a female Marine vet.

Meeting dicks and asses in the army turned me off enlisting with them. Here's another person joining the "At least it's not the army!" chorus. IMHO, being a secret agent of a secret organization is much better ;)

I think this exact reason is why is pisses me off. I want to join the military in a couple years(Air Force Academy, *fingers crossed), and a big part of me feeling confident about is the number of assurances and help I've gotten from fellow women in the service/vetss. So fuck you and your gender sterotypes; women can serve in the military just as capably as men. You don't have to change a big part of Watson's canon just because ~ooooohhhh, she's a ~giiiirrrlll~

The Academy? Wow, I am impressed. That's a great goal to have! I never would have even bothered imagining it when I was in high school. I'm not nearly clever enough.

I know exactly what you mean. Maybe they just assumed no one would want to see a female vet. Except, you know, all those female vets. Oh wait, they don't exist, right?

I'm getting an Associate's degree at a community college while I make sure it's what I want and I get experience with college-level stuff(I was homeschooled), but I plan on applying as soon as I can.

Yep. So many levels of fail. And I honestly expected more from CBS.

Yep. I was like "They did so good with JAG and NCIS, I have to give them a shot..." but I should have realized that they're also the geniuses behind Two and A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory.

Yes. Yes, they are. None of the shows they produce are really my cup of tea anyway, though. I like more fighting and extraordinary antics.

Ha ha. No. Yes. But no.

Only in the United States military, and only in an official capacity, which is finally changing. Women are now being integrated into combat positions.

But women do get involved in combat, all the time. This current war is a war without battle lines, and plenty of women have unofficially been participating combatants in skirmishes. Women get injured, and fight to the last one, and die in this war, just like the men do. There's no reason why a woman, especially a medically trained one, would not have seen combat in this war.

Well, they made Sherlock a recovering addict who moved to NYC. (Yes, he was a user in the stories but never a recovering addict who moved overseas to sober up.) So, I am not shocked that they would change Watson in such a way. I chalk it up to, "I have to see how the story is handled before I make up my mind."

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of with you on waiting to see how it's handled but I've been burned. So burned before.

Also, for me the addict angle is very much a part of his character. Choosing to place the storyline earlier in his development seems to be pretty different from just erasing major character points.
