Why is it surprising that people have opinions that you find offensive?

The best trolls, the most effective trolls, imo, are effective because they pick apart a (possibly controversial) topic and twist it or flip it into something so outrageous and inflammatory that people should be able to see under and around the trollish statement to the issue at hand. But, a lot of people don't see the issue at hand and take your statement at face value- there you get wank. Or, they agree with your outrageous remark- there you've outed a bigot, idiot, etc. and you know now who to avoid.

I'd say you were a pretty effective troll.
