Ug. Wicked. Just no. Horrible fanfic that has no grasp of the universe it is trying to write. Author trying to force his own pet issues on a universe where they don't fit rather than writing his own original stuff.

It is one thing to make a villain sympathetic. It is another to completely change their character, completely change the character of everyone else, change the way the universe they live in works, and do it all while lecturing on issues that aren't actually an issue in that universe. Oh, and getting mixed up and taking some things from the movie version of that universe rather than the original universe itself.

The musical is bad enough, but at least it is so completely different and so clearly spun off the movie rather than the books that it is easier to think of it as a completely separate universe.

I disagree. I think that Wicked, at least the first novel, does a great job of taking lots of issues that WERE relevant to the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel and updating them for "adults" and modern times.

WWoO touches on a lot of political, social, and religious issues. It's a lot deeper than people think, usually because it's dismissed as a children's book. Sure the issues were more obviously present in Wicked than in the original Oz books, but it isn't like Wicked just pulled all these issues out of thin air.

IA, though, there are some times where Wicked takes things from the movies and it just seems really weird.

What specifically bugs me is the animal rights thing that makes it out as if Oz treats speaking animals as less than human. And that is absolutely not the case in the books. Yes, the Cowardly Lion often pulls a carriage, but that is just his job. He's treated as an equal member of society and just as beloved as anyone else.

But Oz isn't just one damned novel. There were 13 of them in the original canon and everyone thinks they know the story and nobody reads them and everyone thinks the MacGregor version is just so deep and he barely glanced past the first book and fuck that guy.

I HAVE SO MUCH HATE I CAN'T EVEN.

Not to mention the subsequent fan sequels that are considered by Oz fandom to be canon and DOES HE EVEN GO HERE?

It literally is the worst kind of fanfic. The kind of fanfic that, were it not a published book, everyone would mock out of existence. OOH IT'S OZ BUT ~DARKER~ AND ~EDGIER~ WITH ~SEX~ AND ~ANIMAL RIGHTS(?)~.

SO MUCH THIS.

I found the set of the original series in our small town library as a kid and reread them pretty much every summer for years (partially why the movie everyone else is gaga over doesn't do much for me, I think because I'm all "I care more about Ozma than all this and why is Dorthy not an actual little kid, etc etc"), and you've just perfectly summed up for me why I had such a hard time getting into Wicked book verse. (Hell, the musical gives better with the movie than the trilogy does IMO.)

Awesome to see someone else who hates both! I can't see book or film WWW becoming either of those characters, honestly, but man am I afraid to say that to my flist.
