I like both but I find the novel a drag. The first is always a chore to get through and I haven't succeeded in reading the second because I get so bored.

I can totally understand wanting the book to be adapted but all that sex would be hard to put on screen, especially for an audience that knows the musical better than the books. You can't deny that the musical is more well known than the written work; I know all of my friends and myself were singing along to 'Popular' before we even realized there was a book, and were then shocked to read all of the sex, racism, class-ism, governmental plots, and all kinds of other stuff.

This. This so much. I loved these books from the first read. I don't even think the musical was that good, especially in comparison to the source material. And yet, so many people are surprised there's a book, and when I lend it out, I keep hearing "That wasn't in the musical..." Yes. Because the musical changed it. Not the other way around.

the first novel was okay, but it goes down a spiral of complete dullness after that. And probably during, actually. And the third one... wtf even IS the third one? I gave up after that, never got to the fourth.

Considering the amount of idea recycling that goes into movies these days it'll probably happen within the next ten years.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Whose to say that the movies wouldn't follow the books? I love the books and I appreciate the musical but I was always under the impression they changed the musical due to time constraints.

I had to read the book for a an assignment a few years back -this just before the musical really took off-, and I thought it was a decent read at best (for published fan fiction, anyways). I probably should re-read it again, because there was so much that went over my head the first time around. Never did read the ones that followed it, even though they're sitting in my mom's library. Hmm.

I was pretty surprised when I actually saw a list of the differences in the play from the book, tho'.

Ug. Wicked. Just no. Horrible fanfic that has no grasp of the universe it is trying to write. Author trying to force his own pet issues on a universe where they don't fit rather than writing his own original stuff.

It is one thing to make a villain sympathetic. It is another to completely change their character, completely change the character of everyone else, change the way the universe they live in works, and do it all while lecturing on issues that aren't actually an issue in that universe. Oh, and getting mixed up and taking some things from the movie version of that universe rather than the original universe itself.

The musical is bad enough, but at least it is so completely different and so clearly spun off the movie rather than the books that it is easier to think of it as a completely separate universe.

I don't care for the ones that came after it, but I love the Wicked novel more than any other book. The musical is fine, but if I had to chose, I'd pick a movie of the book over a movie of the musical any day.

I thought the first book was bad, so I never read the others.

I like the songs in the musical, though.

I just really hated the writing style and found everything confusing, so I gave up about one hundred pages in. The musical is really sweet and adorable, and I love the songs, so I'd prefer that to be used for a movie.

Yeahhhhh disagree. I dislike the novels and find Gregory's writing hilariously pretentious. I'll take the cheesetastic but entertaining musical any day of the week.

I'm going to ignore the other comments because I love this book and people dump on it a lot, I'll just say I agree. I guess I'm consoled by the fact that I never particularly thought of it being a book that would make a great movie, and anyway, it's not impossible that it could ever be directly adapted, is it?
rbhudson: (Default)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2012-07-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Seeing a film based on the musical is just taking off the stage; but an adaptation of the book would be a completely fresh take and a way to introduce fans of the show to the books.

Wicked's translation from book to play is so totally sterotypical it's like a parody of itself. It's like "Episodes", or that episode of Bones where Brennan's book is turned into a movie. In making the musical, they took out everything that made the book unique, real, and deep, and replaced it with everything that makes musicals formulaic, lowest common denominator, and popular.

If I ran the world the books would be a miniseries and the broadway show would get an animated film.

Yeah, I read the books first. When I saw there was a musical, I was really confused. I loved the musical as a separate story. I liked the first book too. Or rather, I liked so much what he'd done to the world, the characters, and the history that I didn't care he was clearly trying make Oz the edgiest edge to edge edgily with twice the edginess. After that, I feel like his ability to effectively narrate a story diminished. Like he didn't seem to be able to handle style and tone and make them fit with the plot. I like Liir, though.

Honestly, I remember not liking it. And I thought I was just too young to appreciate it, but I just read Mirror Mirror and I didn't dig that either. The book is so much more my usual taste than the musical, and yet...

Personally, I adore the novel (and do not adore Maguire's failed attempts to turn a character study into a series), but I've just come to say that I love the fact you specifically call it a three-volume epic. A Lion Among Men can go straight to hell.

Hm. As someone who fell in love with the musical (despite its flaws) five years ago, I'd have to disagree. I'll pretty much die of happiness if Wicked (the musical) is ever made into a film.

I agree though with other posters in this thread; a miniseries of the first book would be lovely.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think both were good and all, but the book was just bleak as fuck. It was hard to really get attached to anything because nobody really seemed like they cared that much about each other. And I guess... the musical was a lot more simple and tropey, but I had fun and felt for everybody. They had the kind of bonds I like to see, and I didn't have to guess the whole time about whether such and such relationship actually meant anything or if it was just sort of a way to pass the time.

I'd prefer a movie of the musical myself, just so I wouldn't feel so distant.

Personally, I thought the book was godawful. He was forcing a square peg into a round hole, and it just did not work. Partly because he kept jumping between the movie and original book canon. It was just a mess of uneven characterization, meandering plot and thin back-story. Transforming a character known as a villain into an antihero takes much more subtle and clever crafting than Maguire seems capable of.

I tried "The Ugly Stepsister" too, and while it was not as much of a mess (probably because there are so many versions of 'Cinderella' that almost anything goes), the writing itself was cringe-worthy.

The musical isn't perfect, but it does fix a lot of the mistakes and plot holes of the book, IMO.

As someone who is so pro-book on this subject, I'm SURE you meant "four-volume", right? :P

Those books dies for me the moment one of the characters got raped, was stuck with a child conceived during the rape, had a same sex love interest but in the end were married to their rapist and referred to them as their beloved spouse.

And the fans are partly batshit, if you take a look into the books' official forums. "Necessary rape" my ass.
