I think both were good and all, but the book was just bleak as fuck. It was hard to really get attached to anything because nobody really seemed like they cared that much about each other. And I guess... the musical was a lot more simple and tropey, but I had fun and felt for everybody. They had the kind of bonds I like to see, and I didn't have to guess the whole time about whether such and such relationship actually meant anything or if it was just sort of a way to pass the time.

I'd prefer a movie of the musical myself, just so I wouldn't feel so distant.
