Unfortunately, that's a very reasonable problem to have with female characters in media -- a lot of them aren't written as people, they're written as strange creatures called women that operate as a plot device and who most real-life women can't relate to at all; and it's pretty difficult to write female characters when you don't have a large varied bloc of fictional female characters as a reference.

I actually think most female characters that were written long ago, like, prior to the '50s, are more relatable than the bulk of fictional women in more modern times. Oh sure, they were wrapped up in way more cringe-inducing gender roles and sexist stereotypes, but they tended to actually feel like real-life people, not plot constructs.

Which makes me so mad.

What makes me mad is peope saying there are not many good, relatable female characters in modern media. I have no idea which kind of shows you're watching because I never have a problem finding relatable woman in my entertainment and blanket statements like yours do a nice job of implying that those characters I love are just badly written plot devices.

*rolls eyes* oh come on, don't try and put words in my mouth just to give you an excuse to rant when you KNOW that's not what I meant.

Of course there are great relatable characters in modern media, but they're not nearly as numerous as male characters, when they do appear they're almost always main characters instead of random awesome peripheral characters, and there's not a whole lot of variety of them -- they're often BAMFs or paragons of common sense and intelligence or cute sweethearts or emotionless professionals --, and they often have a big deal made of the fact that they're female. Those can still be great characters, and not all great female characters are like that, but in terms of sheer numbers? Yes, I can see how it can be a problem to create female characters of your own, when, say, someone goes "name an awesome female action hero who can kick anyone's ass" and people have to stop and think after citing Ellen Ripley.
