I have to have physical copies of everything I own, even fansubbed anime gets burned to a disc. I don't believe in this "cloud" shit, I know how transient the internet is. I can remember fanworks that I enjoyed on the internet in 1997 disappearing forever (even in cached form), so, yeah, FUCK THE "CLOUD".

Oh, thank God it's not just me! I hate how the whole world is trying to switch to "the cloud".

"Save your files to the cloud!"

"Save your business notes to the cloud!"

"Play your videogames and save your data on the cloud!"

Yeah, no.

It's like people don't get that, in the grand scheme of things, civilization is pretty damn fragile.

All sorts of scary shit can take all that technology away. Back-ups can be corrupted, go missing or be destroyed by external factors. Systems can be hacked and destroyed. An earthquake could swallow up servers and disconnect those underground internet cables. A tornado/a tsunami/a fire/Anonymous can...

Yeah...

I genuinely feel that my stuff is safer with me, where I can keep an eye on it, then with some people I don't know in some part of the world I don't have any access to.

At least that way, if something happens, I have myself to blame, and that's easier to accept (for me, at least) than laying the blame on someone else.

redundancy redundancy redundancy

I am totally up for storing shit in the cloud, but if it's of any longer term value to me whatsoever better believe that shit is gonna be backed up all over the place. The xbox cloud storage has been so handy for commuting between consoles though.

So very much this. Cloud storage? Thumbs up! Just cloud storage? Oh, hell, no. Backup All Teh Files!

"Play your videogames and save your data on the cloud!"

*sigh* Pisses me off so much. Damn it Sony, let me have my own fucking saves...

I also don't want my private information on another person's server. I don't want my private photos, my financial spreadsheets, my works in progress, out in the open, even with security, because security can be hacked.

I also don't think that it is an accident that Google and a lot of these companies make money by advertising; they really want to be the custodian of your data, guess why?

I have multiple backups of all my stuff.

I also don't put it past programs like iTunes that phone home all the time not to tell their masters what's in your collection, and I don't want to "share" my purchases with "friends" (and Facebook and Google).

So I'll buy things from bandcamp but fuck the iTunes store, I'm not installing that shit.

I am so glad to see that I'm not alone in this. Cloud storage is being touted as this safe way to store all your important shit, but come on, we all know that eventually something will go wrong and they'll lose a bunch of people's irreplaceable stuff.

I will never trust it.
