Unless they have their own computers working as servers, and even then they still have to pay for the internet connection.
Unless I got it all wrong? >_>

Yes, there are better ways of making money for everyone who is working to provide the media and the services and without charging too much the customers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)I refuse to pay for a digital release of something if I can't download a DRM-free copy I can access offline or port to other devices. On the other hand, I like crunchyroll's model because a lot of anime I'll watch if it's there but I have no designs on owning myself, so a monthly subscription fee doesn't bother me.
...in conclusion I usually buy the legit physical medium releases of shows I really like so I can downloaded the hi quality raws/fansubs guilt-free.

And charging more for a digital copy, or as much for a digital copy, as a physical one, is completely ridiculous.
I hate the idea of one little glitch in the system taking away all my shit. And I like the ability to resell or return my item. (Despite video game console companies wanting to make a system where disks can only be used on a few machines. But when that happens, I'm not buying any more games, period.)

This.

However, I will say that they're trying to protect that market from one person buying and then just sharing it all over the internet. The internet has really terrified companies, so they're taking it out on their sale price.

"Save your business notes to the cloud!"
"Play your videogames and save your data on the cloud!"
Yeah, no.
It's like people don't get that, in the grand scheme of things, civilization is pretty damn fragile.
All sorts of scary shit can take all that technology away. Back-ups can be corrupted, go missing or be destroyed by external factors. Systems can be hacked and destroyed. An earthquake could swallow up servers and disconnect those underground internet cables. A tornado/a tsunami/a fire/Anonymous can...
Yeah...
I genuinely feel that my stuff is safer with me, where I can keep an eye on it, then with some people I don't know in some part of the world I don't have any access to.
At least that way, if something happens, I have myself to blame, and that's easier to accept (for me, at least) than laying the blame on someone else.

I am totally up for storing shit in the cloud, but if it's of any longer term value to me whatsoever better believe that shit is gonna be backed up all over the place. The xbox cloud storage has been so handy for commuting between consoles though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 09:36 am (UTC)(link)*sigh* Pisses me off so much. Damn it Sony, let me have my own fucking saves...

I also don't think that it is an accident that Google and a lot of these companies make money by advertising; they really want to be the custodian of your data, guess why?
I have multiple backups of all my stuff.
I also don't put it past programs like iTunes that phone home all the time not to tell their masters what's in your collection, and I don't want to "share" my purchases with "friends" (and Facebook and Google).
So I'll buy things from bandcamp but fuck the iTunes store, I'm not installing that shit.

Also OT but Okazu is a good blog. I do take issue with Erica Friedman's stance on scanlations, though. Not all of us know Japanese and not all of us can learn, so with yuri being such a tiny niche, discouraging scanlations so strongly is absurd. Especially since she runs (or at least used to run) Lillilicious, a fan translation group for yuri titles. She had the right idea with that. With yuri specifically she should probably be encouraging buying copies of titles you read scanned and enjoyed to support it, not decrying scanlations period.
