Have to say I agree with you, anon. That kind of thing always irritates me. I've paid for it, I want a copy of it for good, especially since the server might crash, or I might lose Internet access, or a dozen other things. I don't find it to be fanbrat behavior to want something you have purchased.

No, it's not surprising at all. I look at the digital downloads of movies on PSN that run the same price as a DVD/Bluray (heck, you could probably get the physical copy cheaper at Walmart) and think "naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw". The distribution cost you $0, Sony. Take some of those savings off the cost or I won't even consider it.

Bandwidth isn't free, and neither is the electricity to run those server farms. Still, the costs are minimal when you compare them to producing and shipping a physical disc.

[personal profile] ariakas 2012-07-10 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
True that, but I'm already paying for the bandwidth.

[personal profile] rtydmartel 2012-07-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
But the site hosting the files has to pay for the bandwidth on their end too, whether people are visiting the site and/or downloading files or not. And if they exceed their allotted bandwidth for the month/year, they have to pay extra.

Unless they have their own computers working as servers, and even then they still have to pay for the internet connection.

Unless I got it all wrong? >_>

[personal profile] ariakas 2012-07-10 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
No, I mean that not only am I paying my ISP for bandwidth, I'm already paying Sony to host the files through my PSN network subscription, too.

[personal profile] rtydmartel 2012-07-10 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I misunderstood!

Yes, there are better ways of making money for everyone who is working to provide the media and the services and without charging too much the customers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree and disagree at the same time.

I refuse to pay for a digital release of something if I can't download a DRM-free copy I can access offline or port to other devices. On the other hand, I like crunchyroll's model because a lot of anime I'll watch if it's there but I have no designs on owning myself, so a monthly subscription fee doesn't bother me.

...in conclusion I usually buy the legit physical medium releases of shows I really like so I can downloaded the hi quality raws/fansubs guilt-free.

I generally only buy things as a physical copy, or I don't buy them at all.
And charging more for a digital copy, or as much for a digital copy, as a physical one, is completely ridiculous.

I hate the idea of one little glitch in the system taking away all my shit. And I like the ability to resell or return my item. (Despite video game console companies wanting to make a system where disks can only be used on a few machines. But when that happens, I'm not buying any more games, period.)

This.

Yup, me too. Hell, I don't even buy digital commissions because I like having the physical copy of...anything.

Yeah, that's definitely inflating natural price. That's not fan entitlement; that's consumer common sense.

However, I will say that they're trying to protect that market from one person buying and then just sharing it all over the internet. The internet has really terrified companies, so they're taking it out on their sale price.

I have to have physical copies of everything I own, even fansubbed anime gets burned to a disc. I don't believe in this "cloud" shit, I know how transient the internet is. I can remember fanworks that I enjoyed on the internet in 1997 disappearing forever (even in cached form), so, yeah, FUCK THE "CLOUD".

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank God it's not just me! I hate how the whole world is trying to switch to "the cloud".

"Save your files to the cloud!"

"Save your business notes to the cloud!"

"Play your videogames and save your data on the cloud!"

Yeah, no.

It's like people don't get that, in the grand scheme of things, civilization is pretty damn fragile.

All sorts of scary shit can take all that technology away. Back-ups can be corrupted, go missing or be destroyed by external factors. Systems can be hacked and destroyed. An earthquake could swallow up servers and disconnect those underground internet cables. A tornado/a tsunami/a fire/Anonymous can...

Yeah...

I genuinely feel that my stuff is safer with me, where I can keep an eye on it, then with some people I don't know in some part of the world I don't have any access to.

At least that way, if something happens, I have myself to blame, and that's easier to accept (for me, at least) than laying the blame on someone else.

[personal profile] eatthecity 2012-07-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
redundancy redundancy redundancy

I am totally up for storing shit in the cloud, but if it's of any longer term value to me whatsoever better believe that shit is gonna be backed up all over the place. The xbox cloud storage has been so handy for commuting between consoles though.

So very much this. Cloud storage? Thumbs up! Just cloud storage? Oh, hell, no. Backup All Teh Files!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Play your videogames and save your data on the cloud!"

*sigh* Pisses me off so much. Damn it Sony, let me have my own fucking saves...

I also don't want my private information on another person's server. I don't want my private photos, my financial spreadsheets, my works in progress, out in the open, even with security, because security can be hacked.

I also don't think that it is an accident that Google and a lot of these companies make money by advertising; they really want to be the custodian of your data, guess why?

I have multiple backups of all my stuff.

I also don't put it past programs like iTunes that phone home all the time not to tell their masters what's in your collection, and I don't want to "share" my purchases with "friends" (and Facebook and Google).

So I'll buy things from bandcamp but fuck the iTunes store, I'm not installing that shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
I am so glad to see that I'm not alone in this. Cloud storage is being touted as this safe way to store all your important shit, but come on, we all know that eventually something will go wrong and they'll lose a bunch of people's irreplaceable stuff.

I will never trust it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I refuse to pay anything for my entertainment beyond my internet connection.
nachtmusik: (demonic yuri)

[personal profile] nachtmusik 2012-07-10 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. While I agree with you that a digital download should cost less than a physical copy, fan entitlement really is an issue. The specific issue of overpriced digital comics isn't really the sort of thing I think of when I think of fan entitlement, though. That's more along the lines of people who think anything is too much to pay for their anime/manga. People who expect absolute perfection in a release, if even the slightest thing is off or it takes too long, they'll bitch about it, etc, because really they just plain do not want to pay for anything are the issue here.

Also OT but Okazu is a good blog. I do take issue with Erica Friedman's stance on scanlations, though. Not all of us know Japanese and not all of us can learn, so with yuri being such a tiny niche, discouraging scanlations so strongly is absurd. Especially since she runs (or at least used to run) Lillilicious, a fan translation group for yuri titles. She had the right idea with that. With yuri specifically she should probably be encouraging buying copies of titles you read scanned and enjoyed to support it, not decrying scanlations period.
