They don't treat the artists for their OC very well at all. And yeah, the thing with being a freelance artist is you're probably always going to be bending over for someone, but TokyoPop was one of the few companies I remember professors actively warning students away from.

Heck, even their "rising star" thing they did ages ago was basically a way to get original content for stupidly cheap.

Ahhhh. Yeah, I never paid much attention to their original content so I wouldn't know about that. :/

Basically, they have very, very skeevy business tactics when dealing with the home team. Hell, I don't say this very often, but I would rather read pirated scans of translated manga than actually pay money to TokyoPop these days.

It's not only the English-speaking comic authors they treated poorly--there were Japanese artists that apparently didn't like how their property was handled, either, and have refused to ever work with Stu Levy again. Naoko Takeuchi apparently couldn't WAIT to have her contract up with them because she didn't like how they handled the publishing of Sailor Moon.

The translation of Sailor Moon was really horrible. It was very slangy and sloppy (and now, also horribly dated), and the language in the original was NOT. Sailor Moon was the first thing I ever read from start to finish in Japanese (with the dictionary sitting right next to me), and if it had been slangy, I wouldn't have been able to do that considering I basically had taught myself hiragana and katakana about just the year I started reading it (which was 1994--the manga was not yet complete).

That's really awesome, can I just say - teaching yourself a foreign language and reading something you love!
