I feel this way when people throw up the feminism/politics/mako/etc. bouquet.

I just like to see and go, "ahhhhh. That person's values don't jive with mine. Oh well. Still would buy them coffee."

I feel like the person you were replying to was saying something closer to: "That person I thought was intelligent and logical is really a moron. What a pity."

I know. I didn't want to validate the doucheosiy of it though.

This isn't a conflict of values (except in the loosest sense I suppose).

This is reasonably educated, otherwise intelligent people, believing in FUCKING GHOSTS, this is along with horoscopes like the example I'd use to compare the dumb shit people believe in to.

I'm sorry but we're big boys and girls, and pointing out fucking ghosts (I can't emphasise this enough - we're talking about literal fucking ghosts! Ghosts!) is a ridiculous belief is not being douchey.

They self evidently don't exist by any reasonable measure, and we shouldn't patronise people (like you're doing) that they can just hold these beliefs unchallenged, because like that's just their opinion man.

Nah. Conviction and opinion are similar, but not the same.

Umm, no. You're the one who's being patronizing, condescending, and incredibly insultingly dismissive here. If you don't believe that ghosts exist then that's perfectly fine. Your attitude however sucks and you seem to be taking other people believing in something you don't as some sort of personal insult.

lol but horoscopes are fun. I don't 'believe' in them in any literal sense but I've learned a lot about them because they're enjoyable to me, in the same way as learning the rules of a game is enjoyable. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way about ghosts and ghost lore. It's a lot like having a fandom.

You sound like the kind of person who ruins the annual ghost story thread on Fark at Halloween. Also,

pointing out fucking ghosts ... is a ridiculous belief is not being douchey.

It is when you do it in a douchey way. Which you are now doing, ftr, between the repeated use of 'ridiculous,' the use of 'shit' as a substitute noun for 'this thing people believe in,' and, arguably, all the angry-sounding swearing everywhere. I say this as someone who "believes" in "ghosts" for the fun spooky aspects and otherwise argues against people claiming they exist (or at least the evidence they present). Issuing personal attacks sure doesn't change anyone's mind.

ChimbleySweep for me, though I don't comment much. (Though apparently these days if there's a thread filled with raging sexism, I'm there. Owie.)

Raging sexism? On Fark? You new there? Seriously, though, I lurk the fuck out on the main, politics and entertainment tabs. I have a handle, but I can't remember it. That's how much I comment. I think it's electronsexparty.

Haha, no, I've been hanging around there for longer than I care to think about. I've just been oh so slowly delurking, and it mainly seems to be trying to combat in any small way the grossness that gets bounced around the echo chamber of Straight Horny Men that gets me to comment.

I don't think I could stand not logging in, even for just lurking! Especially now that they've vastly improved (and added in the first place, actually; plus the Farky addon for Firefox stopped being updated...) a favorites system that lets me color-code other posters and add comments about what's awful about them so I know when to take their comments with a grain of salt in the future. Come to think of it, very few of my favorites are actually favored....

My handle is lemonysprite. I too am a lurker! I do have an account but I think I've commented twice?

Yep. That's about the amount of times I've commented. I wonder sometimes how many sites F!S commenters crossover to/ also lurk on. Now I know one place.

just hold these beliefs unchallenged

Yeah, up to a point you know? I don't go around screaming insults at everyone who I disagree with, even if I am a skeptical atheist who thinks religion is silly. "I will challenge and challenge you until you change your mind" is shit that many people try to pull, for all sorts of reasons, but it doesn't tend to be too productive taken to an extreme (that you may be arguing is always appropriate?). Like the douchebags who desecrate Indigenous sacred sites and then say "well it's just superstition innit?"

Yeah sure, say you don't believe in something, speak up, say why, I do, but going around telling people they're stupid and patronisable ad infinitum.. well, it's taking the authority of science a little too far into the territory of moral absolutism. And that shit is never pretty.

There was this one lady who would stalk Andrew station in South Boston. Whenever I was waiting for a bus she would hound me, trying to get me to renounce my atheism and believe in god. And she. never. left. me. alone. No matter how many times I told her 'no thanks'. She even went as far as to say I "believed" in the Epic of Gilgamesh, so why couldn't I believe in the bible, right after I started pointing out historical basis for the thing (I was very tired at this point, and sick to death of her harassing me) It was the most annoying thing ever.

Sometimes certain beliefs should just be left alone, because it comes off as douchebaggery when you just can't take "no" for an answer. Ah well.

Oh gawd, that woman would shit me to tears. Sure, she believed what she was doing was ~right~ and ~noble~, but her eternal soul needs a good slapping around.

All Christians who've come into my sphere have given up at some point. Even the personally invested ones. For which I am truly grateful.

When I was fourteen while I was studying at a public library a man I had never met before in my life invited me to his church. I told him I was an atheist. He then leaned in, inches away from my face, and with the craziest eyes I have ever seen in my life very quietly said "I don't hate you for being an atheist. I don't think you're possessed or anything," and just stayed there. Still staring into my eyes. I said "Oh, that's cool. I have to go to the bathroom" and fled.

I was homeschooled for religious reasons and not allowed to socialize so I had a terrible phobia of strangers and was shaking so bad I dropped my books twice. I'm a lot better now but I still get a little worked up thinking about it!

I think anyone would react much the same way, phobia of strangers or not.

That is some creepy shit that guy pulled. o__O

I was fourteen as well, and heading to school a little later than usual (It was MCAS testing for the tenth/twelfth graders, so classes started later in the day) while walking past a bus stop, this lady ran up to me holding a stack of black and white photocopied images. She started talking "I know kids your age don't really believe in religion..." as she was talking I looked down at what she was showing me. A teenage boy, in fetal position, holding his head and the words "ORIGINAL SIN" over the image. I said "Ah, I got to get to school sorry" and started running.

Creepiest experience I've ever had with something like that XD
