Just do it anon! I doubt people will really notice. If you like them, it shouldn't matter what people think.

If your school lets you bring in lunches, I don't see how much different this would be from paper-bagging it. Seriously, nobody cares.

Bentos are delicious. No one blinks twice about buying / bringing a made one here. . .except to go 'ooh, bento! I want some! : DD'

. . .Then again, I live in Hawai'i where we have embraced Japanese culture and made out with it. . .so. . .yeah. But I still say go for it!

I took a couple when I was in eighth grade. All I heard was "How cute!", "Can I have a bite?", and "No, seriously let me get at that." so I'd say go for it? They're a lot of fun!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt anyone would really care. If you really like the food, just pack rice and umeboshi in one container, fish in another. Simple lunch.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I come from a Japanese family and I never brought a kawaii~ bento box to school for lunch. It's pretty much just rice. So just bring rice to school and whatever else you want to eat with it.

Anon, I am white, and I was taking bento to school lunch before anime was even a thing in America. Unless you make a giant production out of it, nobody will think you're a weeaboo.

Of course, we called it "Tupperware lunches" back then. (Or you could call it "tiffin" and pretend you're steampunk instead of otaku!)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah this

to any random person it'll just look like a very well organized and kind of cute lunch box

which uh it's what it is

Really? This is what keeps you awake at night?

Enjoy your adorable food, anon! Be a trendsetter! Form an anime/manga club! Start a blog!
But above all, just have fun with your adorable food, ok? People who make fun of other people's lunches are not people you should give a fuck about at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think that people would ask you for food instead of making fun.

Didn't even know there was a show about bento-making! Just here to say that making bentos is so much fun (and delicious) and you should totally do it. I basically adore Maki from Just Bento because she has amazing recipes which won't be a pain in the ass to make for an occasional school bento.

Plus, making them for other people is even better! My boyfriend loves it whenever I make one for him before work.

Go for it! Bento food is USUALLY healthier for you and delicious. Nothing wrong with being non-Japanese and enjoying Japanese food.

Bento food is USUALLY healthier for you and delicious.

Good God, where is this true? 99% of bento here come with either a piece of fried chicken or a hot dog.

Eeeh... actually, white rice isn't that good for you, and most of the other things in bento are often deep fried, and most always pretty fatty and greasy with tons of salt.

You should do it! If it makes you happy then screw what other people might think of it. It's not harming anybody.

I actually had a bad experience when I brought sushi to school for the first time. One of the girls I always sat with made a scene and said she couldn't sit next to me while I ate something so disgusting. Everybody else thought she was being ridiculous.

I'm sure if anybody does have a problem with you bringing a Ben-to box to school, the majority of the people around you will think they're being dramatic. It's their problem, not yours.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
When I was in high school I used to make onigiri and take them to school with me. No one ever said anything, except for one asshole who stole my food because he wanted to eat it. I highly doubt anyone will say anything other than "oh, what's that? Can I have some?"

OP! If you haven't seen this yet!

I've been using bento for years! It's convenient, less messy than paper-bagging it, and I just like having my lunch in a cute box (I don't necessarily make cute food). No one has ever said anything about them other than, "Oh, that looks interesting." Don't worry, OP! No one should care about the way you bring your lunch to school.

It's just food.

Unless you're making it a point to draw attention to your lunch as being "special" and *~Japanese~*, who gives a shit.

Who cares it's just food, it's just a way of presentation. If anyone asks, tell them it's delicious! I can't even wrap my head around why you would ask, the answer should be obvious.

The only way people could judge you is if you have a ton of people who make bento for lunch, and they think your bento-making is crappy and amateur. But since that's probably not the case, why would anyone care that you bring a lunchbox?
