have you read one flew over the cuckoo's nest? arguably misogynistic (it has shown up on f!s before partially because of this) but the writing is pretty good

I second this rec. It's one of my favorite books, and the narration is very unique.

Always meant to read that one because it is a classic and we didn't work on it in school, not sure why. Thinking back we did very little American literature and the ones we did do we didn't even have to read.

Agreed, it is a good book even if for the misogyny

And even though the Milos Forman movie is decent it fails for lack of the main character's perspective (he takes a back seat to Jack Nicholson in that movie)
