Might not be quite what you're looking for, but it hits some of the major qualifiers - someone recc'd this a couple months back and I absolutely love it. A slightly silly premise, but with very thoughtful characterization - by haicrescendo.

Aaaah I'd forgotten about that one! (I posted a bunch of recs further down *points*) Yes I second this! :D Second this so hard!

I am seconding this wholeheartedly because I think it's the best Avengers fic I've read.

so this fic may actually get me into of a fandom of a movie i watched and didn't enjoy because heart breaking

:D I liked the movie initially, but this fic made me so much more invested.
