As a Buffy/Angel/Firefly fan, i must say you need a little perspective. The Pepper/Tony 'ship was mostly established in the Iron Man movies, and he certainly didn't change it or do anything spectacularly *new* with it.
I say we're lucky he didn't have them breaking up in the penultimate scene of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)Eh, well, I still say that Joss is excellent at characterization and dialogue when he's severely restricted — like, you know, the studios wouldn't let him do shit like killing and breaking up couples for no reason — so....I guess we can thank him for not screwing them up? Making their dialogue crackle despite very little screentime? Whatever.
(I actually don't want him to write/direct Avengers 2, even though I think he did great with Avengers 1, because I'm afraid that the execs will give him more freedom because of his success with this movie and he'll wind up having the characters randomly hate each other for nonsensical reasons or do contrived unforgivable things to each other just to shoehorn in some drama. The man cannot develop characters to save his life — he has to wring every drop of ugliness out of their pre-development potential. I have literally never had someone I loved and hated so much at the same time.)
