sherlock fanfic

I worked out why Sherlock fanfic creeps me out. It was all very incidental and my BFF realised at the same time and we kind of shared a look of horror. Now we both know why we won't watch the modern day version either.

It's because my best friend and I share a very similar dynamic and living situation. The 2 of us live together, we've been best friends for years, the friendship could almost be called romantic (subtext if it was a story I guess), not wanting to get into details but she's a dr and I'm on my way to an equivalent profession.
Thank god neither of us is solving murders while living together.

and we read a fic about unrequited love or lust or whatever and we both really frowny faced at that because we had that happen (and moved on) - but damn if people don't side eye us and think we're in a relationship and it was eerily similar to our lives

and then we both got creeped out and agreed not to talk about sherlock anymore

That's reasonable enough. I get skeeved by Kirk/McCoy because of having a similar dynamic with one of my friends, and there's nothing wrong with that.

This is why I have a hard time shipping a lot of slash and het, since it's like "Oh, they care about each other, they must be fucking!"

Femmslash falls under the slash umbrella, same as transslash, sibslash and all the other slashes.

That's kind of funny that you say that OP because I had a similar problem when I started to become involved in the Sherlock fandom. My best friend and I have a very similar (platonic) dynamic with the characters in the show, so when I started out I only allowed myself to read platonic Sherlock fanfic.

There is not a lot of that because of the holy grail of the almighty OTP.

I think what got me over the block is that I talked about romantic/porn fanfic a lot to my friend (even though she didn't really even love the show and she's not in the fandom at all), so I felt less weird about it and now I can sort of detach us from the characters.

Once though I read a story where Sherlock raped John for an experiment and then stalked him when John left and it made me run right over to my friend's dorm room and I hugged her and told her I would never ever hurt her. *shiver* That fic scared the shit out of me.
