Hmm. You do have a point here in that a lot of it happens post-redemption. And of course everyone's mileage may vary on how that redemption goes (I'm not fond of it on a lot of levels for my own fangirl reasons but whatever). The problem I find with this (and it's one the OP pointed out is) everyone seems to forget (both in univers in these fics and sometimes the authors themselves, though that's likely just not caring enough) that Loki murdered Phil. That little fact gets brushed aside and that seems very OOC disrespectful to me from a lot of the characters, Tony included.

It's not out of the question that there could be some forgiveness but maybe if there was more stuff out there dealing with that process, I'd find the pairing less off-putting.

Yeah, now that I think of it the Coulson issue is suddenly making a horrifyingly huge amount of sense and I'm actually getting newly angry at the idea of palling around with Loki after he killed Coulson as I sit here. It's weird that I forgot about it — it was right in the forefront of my mind when I first saw the movie, and I know I have made comparisons between Coulson and Yinsen.

Signs you've been reading too much Avengers-fic: You forget Coulson's actually dead :D

Someone (supposedly) found Coulson walking around in the ending scene on the Helicarrier. Whether I believe that or not, I'm ignoring that Coulson is actually dead. :)

I saw that too... don't know if I buy it (the screen cap is REALLY low quality and the shot's pretty far out. It could really be anybody). But I'm perfectly happy to play the DENY DENY DENY game in fic. ;)

Ain't that the truth? lol Of course that depends on what you read. If you pair him off with anyone there's enough angsty "OMG DEATH!" or fix it fic to remind you. ;)

It's my major sticking point with Loki as Avenger fic in general right now. As said, if it is dealt with, or if there are characters that are very uncomfortable/angry about it (ie Clint, Tony, or PEPPER! God I'd love to see fic where Pepper freaks out that Loki's hanging out in Stark Tower because HE KILLED HER FRIEND!!) then I could totally buy it.'

I just don't think Loki's getting an invite to Thanksgiving dinner that easily. LOL

I admit that even though I'm not a Loki fan, I'm a huge fan of Loki-redemption (I mean actual redemption, not retcons of 'oh, he was actually good all along') simply because I love Thor so much and I know that the only scenario in which he'll be truly happy is if Loki becomes good again and the thought of Loki making Thor so miserable by hating him and doing terrible things without remorse makes my heart break. So I'm admittedly a bit too overzealous with wanting everything to be okay for Thor's sake.

But yes, definitely, no matter how sincere he is redeemed!Loki would have to absolutely crawl for it to get anyone to give him an inch of leeway after killing Coulson. I'm sure the 9/11-ish scads of tragedies from the battle of Manhattan aren't gonna do him any favors either. Neither will all the SHIELD agents who lost coworkers. Or Clint's likely case of severe PTSD.

See, this is why evil people are considered EVIL.

However, most Tony/Loki fics I've seen actually have Coulson alive in them (joys of fandom fix-it tendencies)

Okay, this is a legitimate question on this, because I don't read Tony/Loki much and I'm curious.

In "Coulson is alive" versions, did the attack still happen? Was he still stabbed? Or is that just not a part of those fics' canon?

Yes, it's usually explained by "when Fury said "they called it" (about the paramedics who appeared just before the scene cut away from Coulson), he was lying". And Coulson's actually in a coma in a secret Hellicarrier ICU. Given Fury's stunt with the trading cards, I suppose it's the most IC reaction.

I did see one fix-fic where the Avengers find out that Coulson's not totally dead because the spear he was stabbed with was magic, and they go to Arlington cemetery to dig up his body and heal him with Asgardian voodoo and accidentally zombify all the corpses in Arlington. That was a really creepy one.

do you have a link for the zombie one?

Okay, that's pretty consistent with non Loki/Tony fic so... cool. lol

OMG... um... link? I'd kind of like to read the crap out of that! :D

But coulson was a solider, in a war, holding a big gun at Loki. Was he expecting sleeping potion?

And if he was 'doing his job' why do people cheer when Fury shoots the guy off the helicarrier with the bombs who was doing his job.

But Tony stated, directly to Steve "He wasn't a soldier". So in Tony's mind, in his emotional reaction, that's not a factor. His friend is dead, Loki caused that.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure he told Steve We're not soldiers.

My mistake, but the point stands.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
He wasn't a solider, but he sure isn't a civilian.

I don't get the love for that character anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Da

IAWTC but I don't think the fact that in-verse Tony was friends with him is in any doubt, and the point here is more about in-verse character motivations than whether the fan likes Coulson or not. This is the second time I've seen the 'Coulson was pointing a gun at Loki, so no one should/would be angry at Loki for killing him!!!' argument brought up, and it still baffles me to the depths of my soul. :T

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2012-07-16 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. But love for the character has nothing to do with TONY'S reaction to his death. You don't have to love him for Tony to react in canon in the way he did.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. Sure he was coming at Loki with a gun. But Loki is a V.I.L.L.A.I.N. I know that's a hard concept to grasp for some people, but the situation makes no difference to the fact that Loki is the evil dude who killed Coulson, a guy Tony liked and was even friends with. I hope you know that Tony as on Coulson's 'side' yes? He's not going to turn and say 'oh you just killed him because he was doing the right thing as part of his job and he had a BFG, my bad, that's A-OK, let's have sex! :D'

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Damn your tone sure is patronizing.

LOL that was totally what I read.

The Big Friendly Giant makes no appearance in this comment, unfortunately. :(
