I don't have enough energy to bother hating a fictional character, actually. I just don't like him that much, given that I was neutral on him at the start of the show and then he was a jerk. He does have a very borderline-Sue characterization, though.

Exhibit A: Multiple characters are romantically interested in him, including one for inadequately explored reasons (ie. he's kind of a dick to Korra, we see them interact only as teammates and... suddenly she's in love with him. Okay.)

Exhibit B: He upstages the main character in the finale against her main villain, and is the only one other than the Avatar (ie. the most powerful bender on the planet) to get the best of Amon's psychic bloodbending.

Exhibit C: He gets away with acting like a dick, and even when he is called on it, the narrative doesn't really support his calling out or support the idea that he actually did anything wrong, and in the end he gets everything he wanted with no actual consequences for his shitty actions.

so are you of the mindset that korra is a mary sue? because i've seen people whine about that as well and, by all rights, she has far more mary sue traits than mako (which idc personally because i love her anyhow).

Korra doesn't have any particularly Sue-ish tendencies that I've noticed. People generally react to her in both positive and negative ways as befits her actions and established role in the story. She gets in trouble and makes mistakes and the narrative tends to admit her errors and doesn't vilify the people who call her out (ie. Lin isn't shown to be a horrible person and OMGWRONG for arresting Korra, just a kind of stuffy and strict police chief). As the primary protagonist in an important role, there isn't anyone for her to usurp the spotlight from. The main character is supposed to be the focus of the story.

In summary, the narrative and universe of the show reacts to Korra in a fashion appropriate to her role in it (as primary protagonist and Avatar), ergo she is lacking the only important diagnostic quality of a Sue.
