Please point out the BS in the Mako hate, anon, cause I want to like him (again), too. It's not like I enjoy hating one of the mains.

And no straw man arguments like "Amon/Tarrlok/Tahno are much worse than him why aren't they bashed as much". Fact is that they're presented as villains who are punished for their bad deeds. Meanwhile, Mako is a dick to Asami, does never show any shame or guilt when she calls him out on his BS, does not acknowledge that their relationship got messy because of HIM and yet he still gets his TRU WUV Korra.

BS criticisms? Really? You're upset people are criticising a character? Look, when this many people are angry over a character and feel he takes away from the show.

It's feedback.

When a character pisses off that many people for the same reason, there's something that's gone wrong at some point with his creation.

Get used to it. The writers fucked up, they're now aware, hopefully it will be fixed in the next books so he can be tolerated rather than flinching and disliking all the characters and the whole show because of one badly thought shallow plot device.


But it's good that your writers block was broken. I don't care what fics your write about his penis/good looks/whatever

Except that the criticisms are generally completely valid.

Also, if you're supporting something solely because other people are mocking it, you sound kind of bored and wannabe-special snowflake.

As others have said, it's not like I enjoy hating Mako. I wanted to like him, especially since he's named after Iroh's voice actor.

Many fans have legitimate criticisms of his character. He's presented as the Ideal Love Interest, when he really isn't. At all. And that I think is the most troubling thing about his character.

I only hope they do a better job with him and his relationship with Korra next season.

mako isn't nearly as bad as the fandom likes to think he is. he sucks at relationships, that's it.

For a lot of people, how Mako was written and the unnecessary love triangle ruined what could have been a great (not just good, or for some harsher critics, mediocre) first season of Korra; and just objectively speaking Mako's character was the cause of a lot of poor character and plot development.

It's great that you're defending his character, but a lot of the criticism for Mako isn't unjustified, like it is in other cases of extreme character hate.

I don't actively hate him, but I dislike him because of his actions and his personality in general has left me unimpressed.

I'm actually pleased that he's gotten so much hate, because if he was a female character you know he'd have been crucified. I'm happy to see that he doesn't get a free pass simply because he's male, good-looking and one of the main characters.
This is a one-time thing I haven't seen in other fandoms, ever. So yeah, I'm pleased, as long as the hatred is for the right reasons.

My favorite thing about Mako was how he turned into a Zuko-type character into a Katara-type character in the span of 12 episodes. I'm not being sarcastic. I thought it was fascinating.

Some of the hatred Mako does get IS extreme, the boy isn't satan.

But I still can't like him yet. I guess in the end, Mako became the symbol of everything which stopped Korra as a show reaching it's full potential/resulted in the parts people hated- because he was in the centre of a love triangle which continued because of his own stupidity.

And while he is a teenage boy and I guess that's NORMAL in some way, that doesn't mean he's likeable. And it's never really called out on much beyond Asami. And I think we weren't supposed to agree with her so... readily as some of us did. A little? Feel sorry for her? Yes, but not as much as we did.

I'm hoping season 2 will change my dislike of Mako for me in some way (as well as my feelings on Makorra). We'll have to see.

What I don't understand is how come everyone seems to jump on all of Mako's faults but ignores Korra's. It seems to be a pretty popular argument that Mako was leading both girls on, but nobody seems to recognize or acknowledge the fact that it wasn't until Korra kissed him (following the advice that she STEAL HIM AWAY)that Mako even seemed to start having issues about which girl he likes better. Before Korra kissed him, he was pretty much all about Asami.

I think the whole love triangle thing was handled badly, but the hate seems to be focused entirely on Mako. He didn't handle the situation as well as he could have but to me he reads as someone who just isn't good with relationships in general. What bugs me the most about the whole Mako/Korra relationship is that Korra is actively encouraged to steal someone else's boyfriend and nobody in fandom calls her out on it - they just complain about what a jerk Mako is.

I never got the hate for him. Yes, I've read the arguments. The only good critiques are about how he was written badly, and the fans I know are usually good about knowing that's a cause to blame writers instead of characters.

I think you guys are looking for feminist cookies by villainizing a male character for the most common problems fandoms normally reserve for villainizing females.

You've got to admire the single Mako lover on fs here for never giving up.

While I do see people go overboard in making Mako the devil incarnate, most of the time everyone's being perfectly reasonable about it. Plus it's not as if there's no reason to dislike Mako or the way he was written.

The fact that a lot of the people defending him/mocking the haters either seem to miss the point of why people hate him, or act like his age and gender somehow excuse his actions, makes me feel no conviction in disliking him completely.

Well, I can certainly respect liking or disliking a character out of spite. I still don't like Mako, though. I mean, I don't hate him, I just think he's kind of a boring asshole and that he comes across as the Creator's Pet (that's a TVTropes link, by the way, so be warned all who would click it),though of course, YMMV. Also, he just plain rubs me the wrong way. Hopefully becoming a cop will help him grow up a bit and develop a fuller and more interesting personality.
