A little rant
(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)In the end, as I keep saying, everything ties back to the love triangle. I think it dragged down the series immensely. It took away a chance for Mako and Asami to get developed on their own, it took away the chance for Bolin to get developed at all because he wasn't part of it anymore. However, of all people involved, Mako just looks the worst.
Of course, Korra had faults too. However, most of them were addressed, in my opinion, and she also has a learning curve.
I found Mako a bit boring in the beginning, but I started to warm up to him during episode 4. I loved how dorky he was when he met Asami.
Then episode 5 came, and suddenly, he had romantic interest in Korra. This came out of fucking nowhere. I know many Makorra people loved episode 3, but in my opinion, Mako didn't seem to be interested at all in Korra in that episode. He only cared about Bolin and grudgingly accepted Korra's help. I barely got a friendship-vibe from them, to be honest, but maybe that's just me, and I accept that it was the writers' intention to make this the "friendship" episode.
Anyway, back to episode 5. Not only did he suddenly have romantic interest in Korra, his insistence that Bolin shouldn't date her felt rather selfish. And then came the kiss. Now, actually, I'd almost be ready to forgive him for that, if he had behaved right after that. What was bad, however, is that thereby, his rejection of Korra fell flat. He gave her hope that a relationship COULD happen.
Episode 6 was fine again. I loved his cockiness in the arena. Honestly, that's the kind of Mako I like: focused, confident, serious but also fun. The hug he gave Korra at the end of the episode felt very genuine and friendship-y.
Then episode 7 strikes. Boom. He calls Korra jealous and threatens to break off their friendship. And here's the problem. Not only was his reaction bad, but he also took over: instead of Asami, he did the talking. Asami should have confronted Korra. Asami should have been angry. Instead, Asami stood in the background and glared. Worst of all, though, Bolin did nothing. Honestly, what an amazing chance to create some tension between the brothers! Did he not have any opinion on the whole matter? Why didn't he side with Korra? Instead, everything was about the love triangle.
Episode 8 wasn't so bad, but then came episode 9. The problem isn't just that he freaked out like that. It was that he was the only one who freaked out, and that he freaked out harder than back when the equalists had Bolin. Of course, the others were worried too, and I roll my eyes everytime people go all, "omg, Asami, what a selfish bitch, to worry about her relationship while Korra could be dead". It's not as if she let it out on Mako or something. She just talked to Bolin. The end was just the worst, when he just pushed Tenzin aside (who, let's be honest, should have been the one to freak out the most, not Mako) and carried Korra away from the others, playing the knight in shining armour. Again, the love triangle prohibited other characters to be developed.
Episode 10 was the one where the big calling out should have happened and the Masami break up. Instead, he did not take responsibility for the kiss and he told Asami that they'd deal with the relationship later... even though he should have been well-aware at that time that his relationship with Asami wouldn't work out. Instead of just breaking it off, he stringed her along. Or at least tried, because Asami didn't buy his bullshit and called him out. In fact, it would have been better if Asami had initiated the break up, thus showing Mako that what he does has consequences.
The break up in episode 11 was bad because he was the one to initiate it. He doesn't lose anything. Asami loses. Korra is also let off the hook easily. I was okay with her being brash in episode 5. I wasn't okay with her not taking Asami's feelings into consideration at all in the finale.
In episode 12, he wasn't bad per se, but the character had soured on me so badly, that I was just annoyed that in the end, he was portrayed as the hero. To compare it to the original series, it was a bit like Zuko and Katara going against Zuko. Zuko and Katara both got their great fights, and it made you feel good for both of them. Yes, Katara defeated Azula, but it didn't feel undeserved. With Mako and Korra, not only was Korra unable to actually fight against Amon until the end, but the one to strike last was Mako (he didn't hit, but it felt as if he basically ended the fight.) But why? Korra wasn't incapacitated. She had just unlocked her airbending. Why didn't she deliver those last strikes to chase away Amon for good? Having her just stand there was unsatisfying.
I'm glad that the final scene belonged to Lin and not to the Makorra kiss, because that would have been even more unsatisfying. Still, though, I wish instead of just Mako, all her friends would have been waiting for her in the
back.
So, TL;DR, I think the love triangle ruined everything and let Mako look the worst.
I'm looking forward to season 2, because I hope I'll be able to give him another chance, now that the romantic bs is over.
