Here's the BS in it, since so far it only seems like you've got a train of people agreeing with you and you probably could use the other viewpoint: the only thing Mako has done wrong is that he sucks at being a boyfriend. That is it. He's never had a relationship before, and he obviously isn't good at being considerate. But he's also the one who took care of his brother, and he risks his well-being to save Bolin from the Equalists. He goes with Korra when she confronts Amon because he thinks someone needs to back her up.

Yes, he was inconsiderate of Asami. But I think Asami knew exactly what was going on and let him off the hook rather than maintain the status quo.

The thing is, I'd buy into the criticisms a little more if people were united about what Mako should have done with Asami. Should he have stayed with her despite the fact that he loved someone else more than her? That's what fandom seems to be saying... that because he was already in a relationship with Asami, that he should put aside whatever other feelings he has for someone, even if they're stronger, and stay with someone who might not be right for him?

Don't get me wrong. He was a terrible boyfriend. But for fuck's sake, there is so much more to this series than romantic relationships.

First off, thanks for explaining your POV, I do appreciate it. I don't know if you'll return to read this, but here goes:

1. We actually don't know if Mako had a gf before or not.

2. I have yet to see anyone insist that Mako should have stayed with Asami, no matter what. You didn't actually adress any of my problems with how Mako treated Asami, except call him " inconsiderate". He never shows guilt or shame when she confronts him about the kiss. What does that imply about him? That he sees nothing wrong about his behavior. And then he's like " Ooooh, it's not the time to have this talk!" . Even though they are at Tenzin's home and nothing bad is going down right now. But Mako totally has time to sweettalk Korra and lean in to kiss her ( confirmed by the creators, btw) while they hide at hobo camp. With Asami sleeping only a few meters away. And she is still his gf at the time.
You know, that comes of as Mako being a shameless cheater.

And the other problem is, beyond episode 3 we see "Mako the boyfriend" with rare cameo appearances from "Mako the brother". Basically, most of Mako's characterzation is him being a terrible boyfriend. A terrible boyfriend who almost never gets called on his shit, except in episode 10 but at this point he does not give a fuck about Asami's opinion.

We are supposed to cheer for Mako/Korra even though Mako is hypocritical douche who gets rewarded for being an ass and whose cheating is glorified as romantic.

So because the series is not all romance, we should just let it go? As I said, 80 percent of Mako's characterization, such as it is, hinges on the badly written romance. A charcter does not need to be a horrible villain to be disliked. What gets the audience's goat is the crazy dissonance between how we're supposed to perceive him ( somewhat confused but totally dreamy love interest) and how he comes of (shamless, hypocritical , cheating douche with a badly written crush on Korra).
