He's presented as the Ideal Love Interest, when he really isn't. At all. And that I think is the most troubling thing about his character.

This. I wanted to like Mako too, but I didn't think his actions should have been rewarded, or never even called out on. They wrote it as if we'd all be rooting for makorra while a lot viewers were just thought "huh?"

It's really not the character of mako that I dislike, even. I just don't like how he was presented to us.
