I never got the hate for him. Yes, I've read the arguments. The only good critiques are about how he was written badly, and the fans I know are usually good about knowing that's a cause to blame writers instead of characters.

I think you guys are looking for feminist cookies by villainizing a male character for the most common problems fandoms normally reserve for villainizing females.

Except he is actively cheating on his girlfriend for a good chunk of the season. I'm not looking for feminist cookies. In fact, I don't demonize female characters.

So quit it with THE POOR MENZ

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
when did he cheat outside of the kiss?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
is that not enough for you?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Except he is actively cheating on his girlfriend for a good chunk of the season

the kiss was the only time he actually cheated on her. unless you mean to say him not telling her about it counts as cheating, which in my personal opinion it doesn't. if it does to you, then there's no helping that.

The fact he was pining for Korra, went crazy when she was kidnapped (as opposed to everyone else who was eerily fucking calm when they had their little reunion), and just. No. He wanted to be with Korra, but he didn't break up with Asami. That's a bad thing to do, and the fact you're defending him makes you a disgusting person.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
lol no, the heart wants what the heart wants, and mako didn't want asami. he could have went about it a different way, but i have zero fucks to give that he "cheated" on a fictional show, and that doesn't make a person disgusting. save those types of words for people with legitimately horrible opinions, plz.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that this show is aimed at kids and they pick up on what is hit with consequences and what's not.

EXACTLY.

His behavior was glorified.

but i have zero fucks to give that he "cheated" on a fictional show,

I've said this before when people say things dismissive like that: if the key word here is fictional, why the hell are you on a fandom community or otherwise in fandom at all? People are here having these discussions because they feel strongly enough about things to discuss them seriously (or not so seriously, as the case may be), regardless of how "fictional" they are.

Fuck, how do you relate to fictional media at all if that's how you draw the line about what fucks to give? The heart of even the most fantastic stories boils down to how we relate to the characters and the emotional resonance we get from characters relating to each other, even if the other characters are giant amoebas from another galaxy and otherwise not like humans at all.

If you don't care about cheating in real life because 'all's fair...' or whatever, fine, so long as you're never dating me or anyone I care about. But "lol fictional show" is a pointless demarcation. And if you do care about it in real life, then okay, I can also get not getting super worked up over it in a fictional story, but to not give any fucks? Complete disconnect to me.

(And personally I find cheating lackadaisical apathy towards it to be a "legitimately horrible opinion" so, you know. Doesn't mean there aren't worse opinions to hold, but X>Y =/= X>everything.)

YEEEEES! If you want to play in fantasy land you don't suddenly get to yell "It's just fiction," when someone disagrees with you or you start losing.

Also I would like to steal your equation for future use.

I hate hate hate "it's just fiction" when used by anyone (well-timed reminders to prevent serious rage aside, and even then that's a more easily determined moment in RL than online). Doubly so if it's said by someone in a fandom space, because then it goes from being just dumb to dumb and hypocritical.

Steal away. :)

(Though now that I'm thinking about it more, it might make more sense as something like:
X>Y =/= Y<everything, or X<Y =/= X<everything. )

ia with you, but I'm gonna go ahead and say you're being a little over the line by calling anon a "disgusting person".

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
omg. I'm not a Mako stan, but he was NOT "actively cheating" on Asami. Korra kissed him, he kissed back a little, but that was it. No, it wasn't good, but since Mako already decided he was going to be with Asami, not Korra, the kiss was nothing but a bad mistake. Frankly, one kiss isn't all that bad, either - I'm sorry, I can't sympathize with this harping that he's a disgusting human being because of it. After that, sure, he liked Korra, but he liked Asami, too. But he committed himself to Asami, and that was it. the end.

jesus christ, you'd think Mako murdered a puppy for all the hate he gets.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
He fucking kept pursuing Korra. He freaked out when she was kidnapped, whereas he barely reacted when Bolin almost had his bending taken away. It was not a single bad mistake. It was a bunch of "mistakes."

And he committed himself to Asami my ass. If he liked Korra so much, he should have broken up with Asami before pursuing the Avatar.

If it was just the kiss, sure. BUT IT WASN'T. JUST. A FUCKING. KISS.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Are you joking? He freaked out when Korra was kidnapped and therefore CHEATING DOUCHEBAG? Wow, that logic. So, he isn't allowed to freak out when someone he cares about is in danger? holy crap. Obviously he likes Korra, but it WAS just a kiss - that's the only thing he did to cheat on Asami, he can't change his feelings. No, he wasn't an ideal boyfriend but frankly? He wasn't the worst boyfriend ever to grace the pages of fiction, either. He and Asami dated a couple of weeks, and it didn't work out.

And since WHEN did he not freak out when Bolin was kidnapped? that's just... incorrect, I can't even.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you be alright if your significant other had someone else kiss them and did not reel back but instead returned it? Would you sit there and say, "Oh he didn't cheat on me. It was a mistake"? Returning physical affection, in whatever way shape or form while in a relationship with another, is considered a form of cheating. Sure it may not be as severe as him fucking her but it's still a form of cheating.

After that, sure, he liked Korra, but he liked Asami, too. But he committed himself to Asami, and that was it.

But he didn't. He kept going after Korra and telling her how wonderful and amazing she was behind Asami's back. If after the kiss he had been like "Sorry Korra I'm with Asami" and backed off completely that would be one thing but he didn't. If he liked both Korra and Asami why didn't he just tell Asami they needed a break so he could figure things out rather than stay with Asami throughout the whole thing?

In addition Mako never seemed remorseful for anything. At the very least he should have been remorseful for hurting Asami feelings and I'm sorry but the half assed apology we got in the finale does not cut it.

You're not the first person to make deflecting statements about why so many fans hate Mako, and the fact they you and the rest miss the mark by a mile on why everyone does hate him makes it hard to take seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I'm reminded of the guys at Republic City Dispatch show who kept insisting the only ones who'd have a problem with the love triangle and the break-up scene 1. didn't understand subtlety or 2. just wanted something like Twilight.
