Less whiny more srs question; I started watching Game Of Thrones, and while it was okay, I really didn't see the infatuation fandom seems to have. I don't want to read the books right now(I don't have a lot of free time), and really, a big part of what turned me off the TV show was the fact that people die. A lot. Main characters and secondary characters an background characters and everyone in between. As soon as I learned someone's name(wasn't there a secret a while back about how Robb Stark and Jon Snow looked a lot alike? BECAUSE THEY DO AND IT WAS VERY CONFUSING FOR A FEW EPISODES) they tended to die. I've been spoiled a bit, so I'm aware of the bodies that just keep piling up in the books and presumably will also do so in the show(more than they already have).
Basically, is it worth it to watch the entire thing? Is there some epic redeeming factor? I've watched half of S1, and it still hasn't hit any of my interest buttons, except that Daenerys(or does everyone call her Khalessi?) is my favorite and I'm kinda rooting for her and Jon Snow to survive it all. I don't like to get invested in characters only to watch them die terrible deaths, which is, like, a motif with this show. So, tl;dr is it worth it?

I watch it with friends and we have a good time. We discuss important plot points and winsome characters. (We also rewatched S1 to count wangs vs boobs, which was IMHO hilarious). I've spoiled myself quite a bit, too, so I'm taking solace from the deaths in the fact that my favorite characters are not yet dead.

tl;dr - it's worth it for me but YMMV.

I don't think I'll ever be interested in the fandom side or the discussion side, since it just doesn't appeal to me like that...and the only other reason I'd watch is if I loved characters or relationships, two things I hesitant to let myself do, since I don't want to then watch them die.

I'm thinking I'm just gonna stay out of it. I gave it a shot, and it wasn't my thing.

Will it help if you know who are still alive in the novels? Massive spoilers yes, but it helped me to not swear off the show immediately when certain characters died.

Well, I think I'm already spoiled...but, yeah, why not, lay 'em on me. I know about the Red Wedding and Joffrey, but other than that, I haven't tracked down spoilers.

SPOILERS! Here there be major SPOILERS!

[personal profile] agentcthulhu 2012-07-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm behind on the books so this is what I remember from skimming wiki and other sites' spoilers.

People who die in S1:
-Viserys (Dany's creepy brother)
-Khal Drogo (horse lord)
-Robert Baratheon (the King)
-all Stark house staff in the Capital
-Arya's dancing master (offscreen, presumed dead)
-Ned Stark (Boromir)

People who die in S2:
-most of King Robert's bastard children
-Yoren (Wall Guard recruiter)
-recruiters going to The Wall
-Renly (Robert Baratheon's gay brother)
-both Stark senior staff (braided beard guy and bald guy)
-Qarth council members

People who will probably die in S3:
-Tywin Lannister (introduced in S2, father of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion)
-Joffrey (the little shit)
-Robb Stark

Plus lots and lots of minor characters.

There are some epic fight scenes and death scenes in the 2nd half of S1 and S2. But don't feel obligated to watch it if you don't feel up to it.

Interesting. Not what I expected, so this has kinda pushed me back into undecided mode. I guess I'll finish S1 and see how I feel.

Eurgh. One of my rules if I'm diving into something with massive hype is to tell myself that it's probably, certainly, terrible. Same reason I don't get excited for video games either, because it'll never live up to my, or others', expectations.

The characters dying is kind of what kept me watching and reading tbh, even though they're essentially just being fridged, because there are long term effects for it. That and the King's Landing political shenanigans which I didn't expect to like ("fantasy Borgias/Tudors? lol no thanks i'm here for the nudity and dire wolves. oh no i'm hooked!").

IDK. If the Dany and Jon parts are the only ones you like, why not just find summaries of their stories on the wiki/wikias? It sounds like watching this show is an unenjoyable chore for you.

I'm thinking I'll end up trying to just wikipedia everything, but the world is so big and there's so many characters, it's a lot to catch up on.

I really don't mind characters being killed for the advancement of the plot...but that's only if I think the plot is worth it. And what I've seen of it so far, it isn't worth it to me.

to be honest, "everyone dies" is pretty much the reason i stopped reading the books and can't even begin to get into the tv series. =T it's my best friend's favorite thing, too, so i feel kind of bad about it! i figured i spent more time getting irrationally angry at character deaths and confused by plot twists and pov switching than i did actually enjoying the story, and it just wasn't worth it to me.

but really, i wanted more arya! i think she was my favorite character. =]
