You are in for such a shock. It's a very, very large world, and it has a lot to do with way more than Sherlock and mpreg, though mpreg is often a factor of Omegaverse. I guess Sherlock has a large omegaverse fandom? I'm pretty sure the concept as it is currently popularized started with Supernatural fandom, and particularly J2(RPF of the lead actors).

It's essentially a social higharchy; it has elements of "your place in society" and "keep what you really are a secret" which relates it to women's rights and LGBTQ rights, but that's kinda OT. Basically, the three types of people, Alphas, Betas, and Omegas all have specific roles in society, defined by their status. Stories have different takes, but most that I've read assign the Alphas as you'd expect, the dominators, the aggressive ones, the ~real men~ of the story. Betas are usually just average people, as they'd be in our world. Omegas are a special breed, often the ones with the ability and specific need to procreate. Often they're relegated to subservient roles, and can be considered a lower class. They often(but not always) have self-lubrication and can conceive. Alphas knot Omegas(sometimes). Oh, one more thing I've seen commonly; scenting is a big deal, and Alphas and Omegas go into heat, can smell it on each other, and it drives them into a frenzy with the biological imperative to knot or mate.

All in all, I hate the trope when it's straight-up presented, because of all the issues inherent. However, I have read some really cool fics that examine the social constructs and the world that all this happens in, and those are some of my favorite(in any genre).

I'm really not interested in PWP but the possibility of addressing social constructs? Interesting. Sadly though I'm not in either of the main fandoms this trope is in...do you know of fics in other fandoms?

Sorry, I've just barely have found a couple in the only fandom I'm seriously in right now, Supernatural. I think there were some recs downthread, though.

Well-written Omegaverse seems really interesting to me but I can't handle... those specific kinks...

They exist; a lot of stories don't actually have mpreg, merely the background potential for it. As for self-lubrication...that's more widespread. The couple of stories I've read both had self-lube and one had the potential for mpreg.

Don't you think that Dexter Morgan/Jeff Goldblum would make for great pairing dynamic in an omega verse?

I...have no idea? I know nothing of Dexter, and my only knowledge of Jeff Goldblum is that he's in Jurassic Park and Independence Day.

Dextina ate her parents while her brother played with Dexter's phone. It is an Iphone so obviously he accidentally shut down Skynet and saved the world. They were heroes until he and Dextina ate everybody. Neatly. Even serial killing, l33t hacker, raptor-fly mutants have manners.
