See, and that is one thing that makes me a little sad about the movie (aside from *sob* COULSON!).

Prior to Avengers coming out, I liked reading that ship a lot. I think the big things fans saw was that there were a lot of similarities between Loki and Tony as soon as Thor came out. And Loki in Thor is a drastically different person. Still tricky and selfish, but the argument can be made that a lot of what he's doing he's doing because he thinks it is the best thing to do (beginning-of-movie Thor as king of Asgard? Yeah, I'd stage a coup too). So the dynamic in ship-fic is awesome.

But Loki in Avengers is so broken and crazy and rabid, just lashing out and far gone to reason, ready to kill anyone who looks at him funny and make people suffer because, lol, suffering! (Not a trait we saw that much in Thor). So...yeah, haven't really been able to pick up any fic of them since it came out.

Even if that drink line kind of makes me want to.

I'm confused as to how the Loki/Tony "dynamic in ship-fic" was "awesome" or was any different pre-Avengers. Loki still checked off the worthy-of-Tony's-utter-contempt boxes.

I mean, for fuck's sake he wants to make his daddy proud BY KILLING A LOT OF PEOPLE?? In the name of protecting his homeland? Because he's deluded and naive enough that he thinks it's the best thing to do? Does that NOT strike a bell? Do all three of those things seriously not jump out at you right away as being exactly what Tony flat out rejected in disgust and horror and guilt at that first press conference?

The only thing different about The Avengers is that Loki also killed Coulson. In fact, I'd say that if you took Coulson out of the picture, Tony would hate Thor!Loki more than Avengers!Loki, because Avengers!Loki was pretty nuts, whereas Thor!Loki was calm and rational and genuinely believed it was a good idea to murder all the frost giants and throw his power around like a toy.

I didn't say it was healthy, and I certainly didn't say it was awesome. Just interesting. Because of the fact that they have so much similarity, because of how much of the worst of himself Tony can see in Loki.

I think that if Thor!Loki hadn't gotten dropped off the end of the world and presumably tortured, or whatever the hell happened to him, he could have come around, in the same way that Tony was a guy who had no problem making big weapons for people to explode other people with until he was literally forced to see the fruits of his path. I don't think that Tony would have dismissed Loki out of hand for having those opinions. Tony likes to argue with people if he thinks they're wrong. Like, he actually enjoys the process of trying to change someone's mind.

Hell, even now, Loki and Tony probably could have a very interesting, civilized conversation, though it wouldn't be remotely romantic.
