I randomly came across this plot device too and actually found one Avatar fic that is kinda all about the social implications of the alpha and omega roles and less about the actual sex.

It's about the AU!Gaang dealing with puberty and discovering what role they biologically fit into. It's rather fascinating to me and it's fun to guess what sort of role each character would have based on personality and environment.

I think I find this concept fascinating because it completely skews our notions of gender which have always been defined socially by our reproductive roles.
